Each year, thousands of New York City students earn college degrees and yet have no possibility of finding work. The reason is not a lack of job offers, but because they are illegal immigrants.
"We have people who graduate at the top of their classes and they can't get jobs," the director of the City University of New York's Citizenship and Immigration Project, Allan Wernick, said yesterday at a City Council hearing. By recent counts, he said, there are 3,000 undocumented students in the CUNY system. Nationally, 65,000 illegal immigrant students are thought to graduate from high school each year.

Well....DUH!
Like that's a bad thing.
Maybe they should take their degrees back to their home country. Bet they could find jobs THERE.
So all the push to give them instate tuition is all for nothing.....
They haven't gone back home to help their homeland become a paradise?
Perhaps because Federal law provides for serious penalties for companies that employ illegals.....
Boo frickin' hoo.
Wonder how many millions of dollars in federal grant money it took to reach this conclusion.
If we know this, in a time of war, why are they still here??

A bitter pill to swallow, for any would be job applicant who has proper citizenship- or legal immigrant status.
yet have no possibility of finding work.

This is false. Most illegal immigrants come from places with fewer per capita college grads than the US. They may just have to work where they are legal.
Bump
Instead of going after Wal-Mart, they should just visit that school and round up 65,000 in one day.
I'd feel just soooo bad for them, except that they've leached off of our society for their entire lives. They've probably pushed thousands of their classmates out of the way for "emergency room" visits, public school placement, summer jobs, and all the while collected welfare as anchor babies for their criminal parents.
Let 'em beg on the corner and starve for all I care. It's better than they deserve.
There's one enormous caveat that I should point out here. Graduating at the top of your class in the CUNY system is sort of like being the smartest radio host on Air America.
Well jeez, moron (author of the piece), there's a VERY simple solution:
Get freakin' LEGAL..................good lord...........(eyes rolling)
Yeah, I was going to say that, too.
I think if you have a commie state school teacher who is going to give you A's and push you to the front just to romanticize about you over a joint to a reporter that should be taken into account as well!!!
So judging from the title they do realize they are illegal yet they want them employed. Liberal lunacy.
These are illegals going through our educational system, at taxpayers expense.
But a degree does not make one legal.
They can't find jobs, but they found and filled a place while doing their studies thereby blocking a legal resident from getting a degree.
Now comes the job market and any company hiring illegals sooner or later gets caught or is turned in to the INS.
Business losses amount to wasted training costs, hiring all over again, plus fines.
There are a certain amount of jobs, if illegals get placed, legals will be sitting dry.
Yes, jobs need to go to legals.

Go the hell home.
because we're obligated to give them the best education our tax dollars can buy!!!
Haven't you heard? It's in the constitution!!
BTTT
CUNY is a dirty PC diaper in the world of education.
No es mi problemo. America is my house. Get out of my house! Get out of my country! Get out of the sovereign nation of the United Sates of America! America is my house, not your's.
BINGO!! That makes it a Federal crime to hire them!
90% of the time it's a female reporter given the assignment of writing the day's illegal immigrant sob story
AAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWwwwwwwwwww...poor baby. We be ashamed for not rewarding your bad behavior.
Gee, maybe correcting that issue would solve the problem.
Talk about a tempest in a teapot!
How does an illegal immigrant get admitted to an American college anyway?
Maybe the admissions board could make some sort of determination of citizenship/immigration status BEFORE approving the admission?
Just a thought...
So the universities should be fined 3000 times for breaking the law and the illegals should be deported immediately and made to pay back ANY and ALL government assistance they might have received to go to school and live here. I'm tired of paying for foreigners to take my job and my country away, ENOUGH!
PS. If these illegals are so smart, they shouldn't have any problems getting a job OUTSIDE of the USA. India is hiring programmers left and right.
Does Gerson think anybody who is sane cares about these criminal invaders?
how many of the illegals are professors?
If they are Islamic and have engineering degrees, thre is probably a career waiting for them back home in the explosives field (sarcasm)
I wondered the same thing. Farm and construction bosses may be able to get by w/o questioning new employees, but the white collar jobs these kids want will all require proof of the ability to work in this country.
Why let these kids get a US education, at in-state rates, when they can't show they are here legally?
Here's something I've been thinking about. Let's say you've got a sizable crop of illegals w/college degrees. Will white collar employers start acting like construction crews and turn a blind eye to forged documents and hire these kids at cheaper rates than US kids? The illegals need a job and can't really complain.
Right now, hispanics do not attend college in large numbers (and yes, I'm picking on hispanic illegals since they seem to be a bigger problem than other groups). But this could change. Considering their overall numbers in the population, could illegals w/degrees start affecting the job market for recent grads? Just wondering.
Yep, Thats what i was thinking. Legal immigration is fine. Most of our ancestors, including mine, came here legally and did everything by the books. These illegals make me sick.
To all you illegals- The US does not own your A DAMN THING. Come here legally and do things the right way and then mabey you will have a better chance of 'making it in life'. Dont b!itch and complain when you break the law and choose to come here illegally and cant find the level of work you want because you have to pay taxes. You make me sick.
And the problem here is...what?
They can thank Mom and Dad for bringing them here illegally and screwing them in the job market.AWB
Heh heh..it's like.. so that politicians can be liked by the voting-Mexican-American-Latino-Hispanic population.... or something... Heh heh.
Maybe I should go to... I don't know, Elbonia. I'll go there illegally and I'm sure I'll find a college that will place me in a degree program for free. And I will demand that they teach me in English because I feel "entitled" to use only English even when I am in a non-English speaking country. And I expect that I will automatically be offered a good job at great pay when I graduate. I expect the Elbonian taxpayers will gladly subsidize me and I will be given preferential treatment all the way. I feel I'm entitled to this as a matter of "social justice."
How in the world did they get into college?
I bet they could get great jobs if they only went back to where they came from.
They could go home and get a job and work to make their own country a better place. Whine, snivel, play the victim.
Your comment reminds me of a problem the university I worked for faced several years ago. It was a religious university which accepted a lot of foreign students and granted church money to support them, beyond that granted to US citizens. The idea was that these foreign students would get a good education, return to their homelands and make our church organizations in that nation, and the nation itself, a better place for everyone. The problem was, a lot of these foreign students were marrying US citizens and then, of course, not going back to the homeland. The program was being frustrated.
One of the administrators asked me what could be done. Without doing a lot of research on the legalities, I posited that perhaps the university could extend financial help to foreign students with the proviso that it was a loan if they stayed in the US, but it would be forgiven if they returned to their homelands and stayed there for a minimum number of years. That way, no one was forced to leave the country but they had to repay the church's money spent on their behalf if they stayed here.
I have no idea if the university followed through because I left shortly after that, but I think it should, if possible, apply here: go home and you get to take your taxpayer education with you. Stay here and be prepared to repay us. And then give them a short period of time to decide or repayment happens automatically.
Probably not workable, but one can dream, can't one?
Sad. I like to think better of politicians, pretend they are actually interested in the public good, but then I always slap myself for doing so.

Now, THAT was special teenelliott! :)
