And you can be damn certain that I will be a very hard sell on anyone asking for deferment if, God forbid, we institute a draft.

Why? Unless we have a completely universal draft, the job of the board is to determine who the military wants. You make it sound like you would be willing to stick the military with a bunch of people they would have to weed out. I doubt they would view that as optimal.

Are former vets still exempt, or did the Pentagon change that?

I can totally see it happening, the way things are going.

"Well you see, we need your experience!"

B.S. Totally. I paid my dues. OIF II.

I have to fulfil the yearly training requirement to understand the vagaries of selection. I'll get back to you after that.

Wow. To some degree you'd have the power of life and death over people. You've got a good screen name for the job.

I don't believe in the draft in its modern form.

In its original (Revolutionary War) form, the draft simply meant that citizens who were already active members in the State Militias could be drafted into the Continental Army.

Thus the draft applied only to citizens who were already trained (at least marginally) in the State Militias, and who were thereby already willing to fight; it did not apply simply to some layman off the street.

I think that the original (not modern) example should be followed, in general.

I also think that the draft is essentially moot. If large numbers of additional citizens were needed for any legitimate armed conflict (such as the War on Terror,) I believe that an ample volunteer force would be available.

All that would be needed is a national call to service, IMHO.

What might be your position if any new draft includes calling up our daughters, too?
