That is hysterical. CBS wants to replace Dan, Dan, the Memo-readin' Man with the unbiased and totally impartial Perky Katie Couric. Whatever will Matt Lauer do?

CBS News is committing seppuku.

It's a lovely sight...

Katie is already starting to show her age, her TV shelf life is almost up.

A few "smile lines" will give her the appropriate gravitas to serve as a network news anchor.

Two on option contracts were Nixon and Howard Cosell. Both were lawyers, both brilliant men (Howard, make that "Hawart," went far beyond sports in his knowledge, insight) and would have been great in that format.

Hawart would've been fantastic. Knowledgable about many things, with opinions on everything -- and the ability to articulate them at the drop of a hat.

I sat with him one evening in a hotel lobby and watched him deliver his network radio show over the phone -- no rehearsals, one take, perfect timing, hitting every break on the button, without reference to any notes...or even a watch.

A virtuoso performance...

Exactly! My first job in NYC was at WABC, Ch 7. Back in the early 60s, Howart was going local TV sports there.

Same thing. No script, to help, just a 1 min left then a bye-bye. Perfect every time.

He was a lawyer, the youngest JAG major outside the war theaters. He kept the stevedores' unions in line to keep war supplies flowing to Europe.

My suggestion: Follow the model of Bloomberg TV, a small inset screen where the news is read with a headline scroll, a sports scroll, and a money scroll at the bottom. On the righthand side of the screen, you could include a series of running maps/graphs (poll numbers, nations weather, stock market results, etc.). That would allow the small inset box to focus on deeper dives on stories (as you suggested) and change the network news into a more interactive format that would let the viewer focus on what was most important to him/her.

I actually like it.

Fitting replacement for Dan Rather.

CBS has no credibility whatsoever. So why not put an airhead on the airwaves for the brain dead?

CBS could have an instant winner by wholesale stealing the FoxNEWS "Fair and Balanced" program and taking it seriously. If I were a shareholder of CBS, and they spent big bucks to reinforce their problem by signing the Perky One, I would be plenty PO'ed.

They are pissing away one of the great brands in America because they are just stupid, stupid, stupid!

On the up side, GLGB could sleep late, while visions of the Perky One in a hospital gown and spike heels dances in his dreams...

I spent only an hour-or-so with him back in the early seventies, but Howart was, indeed, one of the most extraordinary people I've ever met.

Truly, one of a kind.
