I think sometimes it is easy for us Americans, who live in the US, who are surrounded by other Americans and accustomed to all the power and well-being that are part of being Americans, do not understand how much weight an emissary of the United States of America carries with other nation's governmental officials. A Cabinet official stands as the symbol of all the weight of the American government, military might, financial resources and influence. I think it must be a bit intimidating to some with whom our executive branch persons come in contact. I think that, although we do not tend to stand on ceremony, other nations are concerned about getting everything right, saying everything right, and doing everything right, when with our exec branch people.

A hearty Amen to all you wrote, except for the Grampa part.

I know there will be grace to say goodbye to this wonderful leader when the time comes, but it surely doesn't feel that way today.

He evokes strong feelings in me of "I shall not pass this way again." I know I will miss him terribly, his optimism, his steadiness, shock absorption capacity, Laura, his humor, the twins, his clearsightedness, management skill ... and so on and so on.

And I want people like Chris Matthews to be shamed into oblivion.

I have a dream.

Chris Matthews outlives George W. Bush, has an epiphany, in great and repeated detail, tells the world what an incredibly excellent president / visionary Bush was, and then Chris is hitched to Bush's caisson, and helps the horses pull it many years hence.

Our greatest leaders were born out of need, not necessity or choice. They rise up to lead by the grace of God.

That needed reprising.

I may have previously mentioned that I have a Norwegian friend and classmate. She just found out today that her mother was put in the hospital for surgery on her back (cartilage gone between the joints resulting in a pinched nerve). They tell her the surgery is done all the time, but it's still an operation on the back.

If you ladies and gents don't mind sending a prayer up for a safe operation and good recovery, I'd appreciate it. It turns out she has wounds that won't heal on her legs (not diabetic tho), so that can't be good. The last place you want to be with open wounds like that is a hospital, but, since she wasn't getting any medical care previously, maybe they will help with the leg wounds while she's in for the surgery.

Thanks. As you can imagine, being so far from home and unable to go back, my friend is a bit anxious; probably more so because she's an athiest and has nowhere to turn for consolation. The mother is a good Lutheran, however, so if you'd like to pray for her, I'm sure she'd appreciate it. : )

As an Ohioan, you can rest knowing how critical was your work last year! What an important state Ohio is to our national politics! In good company with Florida and Texas, for which those of us in Blue Maryland are very grateful.

I couldn't find that speech you are looking for but on the Pentagon channel this morning they had a link to an interview with the President and First Lady that was done on August 30. Go to the pentagon channel link and click on "view programming" and in the upper left side will be different things to view. The interview was in the interview category, naturally. But it wasn't there yesterday so maybe sooner or later the speech you are looking for will be listed.

Condi's got some great clothes.
She could let Laura borrow some suits.
And Laura could take Condi to her hairdresser

Then, and only then, will I be satisfied : )

I agree with you. My sentiments exactly about present-day pundits. It was fun to hear Hume sarcastic comment about Kerry's attempt at coherence following Pres. Bush's Annapolis speech. I despise that mealy-mouthed Kristol. And why all this salivating over Joe Lieberman? He prostrated himself beneath Al Bore. I'm wary of him. He's a democrat, for heck's sake. He's probably trying to run for Prez again.
