Bush Presses Congress on Immigration Plan

WASHINGTON - President Bush is stepping up pressure on Congress to embrace his plan for a guest worker plan for foreigners while talking tough about illegal immigration and a need for secure U.S. borders.

"Those who enter the country illegally break the law," Bush said Saturday in his weekly radio address. "In communities near our border, illegal immigration strains the resources of schools, hospitals and law enforcement. And it involves smugglers and gangs that bring crime to our neighborhoods. Faced with this serious challenge our government's responsibility is clear. We're going to protect our borders."

This week, the president made appearances in Arizona and Texas that focused on border security and immigration, two items he says will top his legislative agenda next year.

His goal is to catch more foreigners crossing the border while increasing the number of temporary work visas for those who will take jobs that Americans are unwilling to fill. He is trying to appease social conservatives who take a hard line against illegal immigrants and business leaders who want to hire foreign laborers.

Bush cares more about his precious guest worker program than he ever did about the Supreme Court or the Marriage Amendment.

I don't need appeasing, I just want the laws already on the books enforced.

W and his cronies just don't get it - we Americans REFUSE to allow a guest worker program. NO AMNESTY FOR ILLEGALS. There are NO jobs Americans won't do.

"I'll just call the new amnesty a guest worker program.

My peons are so stupid, they'll believe anything."

A little late but at least he IS addressing the problem. Clinton and Carter made it a policy to bring in as many illegals as possible and immediately register them as Democrats. While Bush may be slow on the ball, he is at least acknowledging the problem . . .

Protect the American people with immigration law enforcement and secure borders. Follow this with deporting ALL illegal aliens to their country of origin.

Finally, end the welfare state.

I read the article and I saw Bush talking about the hardening borders and shipping illegal entrants back, nothing from him about visas or citizenship. The title is misleading.

Bush is taking a class in Mythology 101.

Bush said nothing about jobs Americans won't take. The author said that.

If we do not send all illegals back does anyone in their right mind think they will return to Mexico after being here another six years?

How is it bashing Bush to criticize his policies?

Bush is not one shred less committed to open borders than any Democrat because his business buddies want cheap labor. Kerry wanted to make America part of Europe. The Bush clan wants to make America part of Latin America.

Any "solution" that includes the words "guest worker", only really intends to make the problem worse.
