2nd look at Bush service award

White House panel unaware honoree was on Death Row

Bob Egelko, Chronicle Staff Writer

Saturday, August 6, 2005

A White House council on volunteerism said Friday it's taking another look at how the President's Call to Service Award -- accompanied by a laudatory letter from President Bush -- was issued to Stanley "Tookie" Williams, a California Death Row inmate who has written a series of books warning young people against the gang life.

A spokesman for the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation said that neither the council nor Bush had any way of knowing that the person they were honoring was a condemned multiple murderer.

"We're reviewing the case," said the spokesman, Sandy Scott. "We're looking at who he is, how he got the award and what the organization is that certified him for the award.

"We've never had anything like this before," Scott said.

....The presidential citation, which arrived last week, was a lifetime award for more than 4,000 hours of volunteer service. Williams was nominated by William Harrison, an archbishop in the Old Catholic Orthodox Church in West Monroe, La.

death row conversions are not a reason to commute a sentence.

the woman in Texas was executed while Bush was Governor under similar circumstances.

if you make this a valid reason for clemency, everyone will claim to be converted and born again.

our justice system determines guilt or innocence on this Earth, God can decide on the bigger picture.

I'll bet he'll just die if they take the award back.

Has he or has he not he made an appropriate contribution? Isn't that really the question?

My guess is that you haven't followed this story closely. Am I right?

California penal officials at San Quentin indicate that Williams is still directing the Crips from his prison cell.

Local talkshow host Mark Williams (KFBK Sacramento) reports that the books were ghost written and total sales were in the low hundreds.

Also, Schwarzenegger and "Tookie" used to lift weight together many years ago, Mark and others say. Prison guards tell Mark and listerners that "Tookie" is still one mean, dangerous SOB who has never been anything but high-risk, unlike most death row prisoners.

We'll be lucky if the Governor doesn't free the con. The Governor's hearing is closed to the public. So much for that pesky California "sunshine" law.

Maybe the Bush White House knows something.

This is most likely just like the time the "White House" send a card to some pro-homosexual "church" and the media made a big story out of it.

Turned out the "church" was simply one of several thousand churches that were on a mailing list (put there because they sent something to the White House) and later every church on the mailing list was sent the same card by the White House.

Too bad Tookie is someone the left really supports. This would probably give the left the proof that they seek to prove the White House is run by ninnies. I am tired of hearing that somebody just didn't check the facts. Maybe they can give Kennedy a driving award too. Firings at the White House and throughout the administration would be a small start toward real government.

I'm not sure being on death row should disqualify him for the President's Call to Service Award.

Well I am sure. Being on death row should disqualify someone for getting any award and should certainly disqualify them for a presidential award FCOL. You get the stupidest post of the month award. Of course we are only two days into.

Since I'm 60 dad, you must be at least 80. Perhaps you are getting oldtimers disease. That would explain you lack of mental power...

Hey now, it's the White House. You can't expect them to have access to such sophisticated research resources as Google!

Yes, that is sarcasm.

Haven't seen you post in a while. Merry Christmas. :)

Well perhaps you're just a contrarian and like to throw out stupid statements to get a reaction. But if you were serious, then you're an embarrassment for 60 then to be unable to reason why a Death Row convict should be an automatic exclusion for a presidential award.

You're right of course..they should have searched more. But it just goes to show that the people the nominated him purposely LEFT OUT his murderous past knowing that he awards like this are given fairly easily. They KNEW that getting an award like this would bolster their case...

I just noticed--they don't even have a church location. They meet at 307 Natchitoches Street. According to google, that is either an art gallery called "A Strange Brew" or a dog groomer called "Groomingdales".
