George Michael to wed same-sex partner

Last Updated Wed, 30 Nov 2005 12:47:44 EST

Pop singer George Michael says he plans to wed his longtime partner Kenny Goss under a new British law making gay unions legal.

They plan a small private ceremony after Dec. 21, when the law creating civil partnerships becomes effective in the U.K.

George Michael plans civil union.

He and Goss have been together about 10 years.

The new British legislation permitting same-sex unions has brought forward a slew of couples ready to tie the knot.

Elton John has announced he plans to marry his partner, Toronto's David Furnish, possibly before the end of the year.

Michael, 42, says he thinks he and Goss will have a ceremony early next year. "I'm sure Kenny and I will be doing the old legal thing, but we won't be doing the whole veil and gown thing," he said in an interview with Associated Press.

He says they want to marry because he could get hit by a bus and Goss could end up with nothing. Michael came out in 1998 after being arrested in Los Angeles for performing a lewd act(i.e looking for sex in a Beverly Hills public park men's restroom).

Michael, former lead singer of Wham!, also had a successful solo career in the 1980s. He announced in 2004 that he would not release any more albums and that any new music he makes will be available online.

Britain's Civil Partnerships Bill gives same-sex couples the right to form legally binding partnerships and entitles them to some of the same tax and pension rights as married couples.

If I'm not mistaken, that's what a will is meant for.

This is not a comment on your post but really why is it news when gays get married.....

The MSM will repeat it and breathlessly report it, again and again, until you get used to the Sacrament, and learn to celebrate it.

You are getting drowsy.

Your eyelids are heavy.

They are participating in a blessed event, NOT hijacking State Sanctions for doing filthy things to each other's bums.

Just remember back in those times, actors, entertainers, etc were considered just a cut above prostitutes and cutpurses.

Hmmmmm. Seems NOTHING has changed after all.

The disturbing thing are the churches and "Christians" who back this wicked event...I certainly do not wish harm or harbor a prejudice against gays but this marriage thing "just ain't right"

We have Gay friends..two couples. They themselves are baffled by the Press pressure, and wonder if it is propeganda by Fundies designed to create a backlash. As others have posted, there are existing legal arrangements to leave legacies to parnters..or one's goldfish, or cat, etc..etc. Therefore the biggest excuse given is simply a red herring.

Notice how they are using marriage and civil union interchangably. And weddings are about marriage. All those who say they are for homosexual civil unions and against homosexual marriages are either stupid or dishonest.

I agree I think it has created a backlash and this is not what the gay community needs...or desires...some people are so caught up in the cause that they do not realize their approach to the situation may be causing more harm than good
