As a non West Point graduate but a big supporter of the Black Knights when you get blown out you got to stand up and take the heat for the defeat.

The Navy QB had the run of the day!

"The Navy QB had the run of the day!"

Right, although a fullback outrunning the Army secondary was also impressive. As an old Army man I was impressed. Navy just got mad because Army took the lead.

In the 70's Army had a string of coaches who were big names, but didn't get West Point. They came in and tried to mould the situation to the coach. The results reached a level of pathetic that even had Harvard beating Army (at West Point) Just about every year the Army Navy game was an annual "Navy kicks the crap out of Army" fest. Finally, Jim Young came in, tried his offense, realized it just wouldn't work and adopted the option (Young actually called Air Force's coach to ask for help, how is that for adapting).

What I saw this weekend was not encouraging. Ross is trying to play a straight up pro-set type offense. Not going to work with the talent level available at West Point and because of the restrictions inherent in recruting talent to West Point, he will not be able to get the talent needed to play that offense, no matter how good his reputation is. Hopefully he gets the clue. Otherwise, he will just be another coach eaten up by West Point.

Went to the game and even got to meet Coach Ross before hand. The Black Knights had a rough day. The only thing that can be said is that Navy was the better team Saturday. But.... Army won four games this year and that's more wins than the last two years combined. They will be back next year! Watch out Navy!

I have faith in Coach Ross..... The Black Knights couldn't run Saturday so they moved the ball through the air. Primarily it was their defense that let them down - they could not stop the Navy ground game.

Ha! Next year, Navy will crush those losers from the West Point Reform School for Wayward Children yet again!

Further.....

Ross has been successful at every level of the game: high school, college, and the NFL. Army went from zero to two wins in his first year, and doubled their win total from last year to this year with four. He gets it!

Next year will be even tougher as they have scheduled Notre Dame and Texas A&M. But I have confidence in Ross. Army has also had to play catch-up with facilities and the way the football players fit in to the regular West Point regimen of Army training. This could not be turned around over night. Incremental improvement is the name of the game. Ground was broken for the new indoor practice facility in November.

Go Army!

That is until he came to Detroit - where coaching careers go to die.

Well, it will be a long winter at the facility above Highland Falls, with this loss sticking in their craw.

But they'll be back and beat Canoe U next December!

P.S. Congrats on graduating Annapolis and thanks for your service!

He also had health problems while there. He did however take them to the playoffs...... and that's more than Mooch did!

Yes he did take them to the playoffs, albeit with records of 9-7 and 8-8 (and they were one and done). But yes that is better than under Mooch.

Sorry pal, talent goes a long way towards wining games. If you don't have grade A talent, then you make the best out of what you have. Neither new practice facilities, nor a coach that has been great in the PAST will do the trick. This is now, not then. Four wins in a season (given where they were) is a marked improvement. But, it still is a lousy season given that they just didn't lose to Navy, they were not even competitive.

Look, there are size and weight limits for cadets, regardless of whether they play football or not. Well, they stretch those limits for the football program, but not enough to ever ever have an offensive line of 300 lb players and a defense. Moreover, the talent needed to compete with a Notre Dame is not going to West Point and piss away a potential NFL career. Those are the limitations.

Hence, why the option is the best bet for the cadets. The longer you have the ball, the more your defense is off of the field and the less it is exposed. If you look at Army's best seasons (in recent times) you will see they all had that in common. Ball control.

Hopefully, Ross gets the point (he was an option coach, after all) and gets cracking with shaking the program up and getting rid of the last vestiges of the prior regime.

How do you bring yourself to use the term "losers" when describing the West Point cadets and football players. Jest is one thing but I believe your terminology is lacking in respect for the Corps of Cadets and further dishonors the rivalry. You should retract your statement and apologize.

Personally, I'm proud of the turnaround the Army football team is making and wish them the greatest success (against Air Force)next year.

That's why I love A/N: it's the best rivalry in sports, bar none. Even better than Sox/Yanks.

If you don't get the joke, or the spirit in which the remark was made, I doubt you're really USNA '86. If you are really '86, the only thing I can say is "lighten up, Francis."

Trust me, I know the spirit you're referring to. There's no joke to calling any opponent "loser" and I believe we're above that type of rhetoric, don't you?

I'm sure you're not at all locked in to what I'm saying. I want to make sure that other posts realize that the Brigade is not in the habit of using your terminology to describe the Corps of Cadets.

Give me a break!

I take it you've never participated on or even read a Free Republic Army-Navy thread before. Calling West Pointers "losers" is about as vanilla as you can possibly get.

Lighten up. Your panties are in a twist over nothing at all.
