Islam spread across the world and conquered several distinct gene pools. But the core of Islam is Arabia and the Arabs are Semites. They share common ancestry with the Jewish people who are also Semites.

The Jews have produced the greatest number of Nobel Prize winners in proportion to their population of any ethnic group. The Arabs have produced perhaps the least. Given the common ancestry, I would say it was cultural rather than genetic.
