NAACP Asks Governor To Grant 'Tookie' Clemency
NBC 4 (Los Angeles) ^ | UPDATED: 11:57 am PST December 6, 2005 | Staff

Posted on 12/06/2005 12:46:48 PM PST by Paleo Conservative

LOS ANGELES -- Saying he and convicted killer Stanley "Tookie" Williams can become "a powerful force for change," the national leader of the NAACP Tuesday asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to grant Williams clemency.

Williams, the 51-year-old co-founder of the Crips gang, was convicted and sentenced to death in 1981 for the deaths of four people in two separate Southland robberies. He is scheduled to be executed Dec. 13.

However, in a rally with local and state NAACP chapter members on the south lawn of City Hall, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People President Bruce Gordon said he was convinced after a recent meeting with Williams at San Quentin Prison that executing him would be a mistake.

"He is our secret weapon to help young African-Americans avoid gangs," Gordon said. "We want to save his life so he can save the lives of others."

A vote for clemency is a vote for hope, Gordon said.

Asked whether he believes Williams' claims of innocence, Gordon said he was persuaded by the convicted killer's demeanor during their meeting.

"As I looked into Stanley's eyes I think I spoke to an honest man," Gordon said.

Gordon scoffed at suggestions the NAACP might be lenient on crime.

"We're not soft on crime, this is a war on crime," Gordon said.

Actor Mike Farrell and Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who also spoke at the rally, called for a moratorium on the death penalty in California until the Legislature can assess its fairness.

Farrell also said too many people are in prison for crimes they did not commit.

"We can't afford to make these kinds of mistakes with the lives of human beings," Farrell said.

Bonnie Williams Taylor, Williams' ex-wife, told the gathering that many injustices occurred during Williams' trial.

She said her heart goes out to the families of the victims, but her ex-husband still denies killing anyone.

Alice Huffman, the NAACP's statewide president, said the group is not asking for Williams' release from prison.

"This is a not a free-Tookie rally, it's a rally to save his life," she said.

The NAACP members are making three other stops today in San Diego, Sacramento and San Francisco to hold similar rallies.

Die Tookie, Die!

Here is a link to some pictures of the rally. I don't have time to post them to this thread.

"Actor Mike Farrell and Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who also spoke at the rally, called for a moratorium on the death penalty in California until the Legislature can assess its fairness."

He was convicted for killing four people and is the founder of a criminal enterprise. Death is too kind for him.

Yes, but like the rest of the liberals in this country they've planned a "cut and run" strategy in this war as well.

Stanley "Tookie" Williams can become "a powerful force for change,"

He already HAS been a "powerful force for change." He changed four people from alive to dead, affecting not only their lives but the lives of everyone they loved and who loved them. He can continue to be a force for that same kind of horrible "change" from his rat cage on Death Row. Or we can carry out the will of the people, duly reviewed, and put this piece of trash in the ground.

"He is our secret weapon to help young African-Americans avoid gangs," Gordon said. "We want to save his life so he can save the lives of others."

Too late. He was convicted on what he DID. It's hard to grant clemency on the basis of what he MIGHT do. And if he's a "secret weapon," you're unarmed.

A vote for clemency is a vote for hope, Gordon said.

And a vote to execute him is a vote for justice.

Yeah, the neo-nazis felt the same way about Timmy McVeigh.

Tookie's had plenty of time since he committed the murders to put an end to black gang crime. I haven't heard any testimonials from reformed gangbangers about how Tookie inspired them to go straight. But he IS a cold-blooded cop-killer who has lived far longer than he should.

The crips were founded before the phrase "terrorist organizations" was part of the common lexicon. However that's exactly what they are. A murderous, racist hate group financed primarily by the trafficking of narcotics. I vote Tookie off the island.

The Grandmother of the murder man was very good at given the reasons why Tookie should not be given life and to go ahead with the original sentence.

Because to Mike Farrell it's never about the VICTIMS! It's all about "how can I get myself on TV for 15 minutes so that people can be reminded I used to be a TV star.

When Manson and his family butchered Sharon Tate, I don't recall Farrell or anybody else asking that Charlie be spared.

I'm not defending the idiot and third-rate actor Farrell here but.... Manson was not given the death penalty because at the time it was illegal. Later, when it became the practice again, they could not apply it retroactively to that piece of trash. I think he actually comes up for parole periodically, along with Sirhan Sirhan.

My wife worked in Singapore for 10 years before coming here. I wish we had Singapore justice here -- you all would like it too:

In Singapore, when you are tried, found guilty, and sentenced to death, the execution is generally held the next morning!! No troublesome time-consuming appeals. A death penalty is just what it sounds like.

Personally, I would no problem pushing the button on this murderer.

However, with that said, I do have a problem with 24 years going by, and still no execution. Justice delayed is justice denied. The delays, of course, were created by his defense team to avoid prosecution, so they could argue that he is NOT the man he was 24 years ago. This scenario should never be permitted to happen again. We need to impose time limits and appeals limits to convicted murderers. 3 appeals in a 2 year time frame would do the trick, and it would also stop this kind of media circus from taking place in the future. After all, victims and their families have rights too!

Manson was given the death penalty. It was changed when Rose Bird overturned it. Then the state via proposition voted her out of office and reinstated it.

But another thing is why doesn't Farrell try changing the law. Man, they vote on EVERYTHING out here - just put an anti-death penalty proposition on the ballot - hell, they could get enough signatures in Berkeley and S.F. to qualify.

They won't do it - because they know what the outcome would be -- California voters would reaffirm that they want the option to put scumsucking bottomfeeders like Williams down like the dogs they are. And they have no argument once they know how the voters feel.

Williams has been doing a LOT of work to keep people out of gangs, and even to organize a gang truce. He has probably saved more lives than he took. They want him saved based on the pretty much sure bet that he will continue his anti-gang work.

I want the punishment that due process has set for this guy. OTOH, it would suck to lose an effective anti-gang crusader. I would probably be calling for a commuted sentence if he would finally admit to his crimes, but he hasn't, so I leave him to the hole he dug for himself.
