Racism cost lives, N.O. evacuees say

WASHINGTON -- Four African-American New Orleans residents told a House committee Tuesday that they felt a sense of abandonment from all levels of government when Hurricane Katrina hit three months ago and believe more lives and homes would have been saved had the victims been predominantly white and wealthier.

"People were allowed to die," said Leah Hodges, who told the panel she still doesn't know if her brother survived the hurricane. She likened what happened to New Orleans, and many of its black residents, to "genocide and ethnic cleansing."

Thompson said she's now living in College Station, Texas, and isn't sure if she will return to New Orleans. "We won't be missed because we were never wanted anyway," Thompson said.

With that attitude, why would anyone want you to come back?!

Their own incompetence was the culprit. Not racism. As a poster on another thread noted, even if you had to walk, 12 miles isn't that far. Some people won't lift a finger to save their own ass.

Uh, the wealthier people, having lived their lives making decisions and taking responsibility for them and theirs, got themselves out. They didn't sit and wait for the gummint.

Did anyone happen to ask these "African-Americans" what color the Mayor of New Orleans is? Or, whether it was the Mayor's job to get the school buses rolling for evacuations? Or, whether those buses, like many of the people, were left to drown as the Mayor fled the City? Or, whether they voted to elect the black Mayor who left them in the lurch?

Somehow, I doubt that those questions were asked or answered. Another instance of worthless testimony before Congress. There's always been a lot of that.

Note to Leah: IF you have the lowest recorded barometric pressure ever recorded in an Atlantic storm, and it jumps to a cat five with 175 mph winds and you don't have enough sense to get the heck out of its way, that is not racism, that is stupidity.

I'm sick of these complainers. Not enough black people volunteer to help at the Red Cross? The Red Cross is racist. Not enough black people evacuatted and the black mayor of New Orleans didn't do enough of a job to help people leave? Clearly racism at work. I'm surprised they haven't denounced Katrina as a racist Jim Crow hurricane!

This isn't surprising though. Decades of liberal entitlement programs have created this. People have never had to take responsability for anything. They've always been given handouts. Comfortable with those, they use the stock excuse of racism to excuse a lack of motivation to improve their situation, and a lack of commitment to things like education. Anything wrong in their lifes isn't their fault, and is best fixed with more dollars from the federal government.

Same with Mayor Bob-White.

If there had been adequate places for Houstonians to seek shelter, they wouldn't have clogged the highways leaving town.

Texans are big-hearted people, and like other big-hearted people. Perry's rating improvement is also due to his level-headedness in the evacuation of the Texas Gulf Coast pre-Rita.

Actually, it was a long-time tradition of social dependency that caused problems for so many New Orleans blacks.

Most of the people left. Because most of the people aren't social parasites expecting that everything in their life be provided free of charge and in first-class condition.

But the Democrats in Louisiana have succeeded in convincing a lot of N.O. blacks that they have no responsibility for anything, including their own lives.

"People were allowed to die," said Leah Hodges, who told the panel she still doesn't know if her brother survived the hurricane. She likened what happened to New Orleans, and many of its black residents, to "genocide and ethnic cleansing."

An act of God killed people. Let me ask you one question. Who finally saved you, was it white people? I bet it was.

just an excuse to cover up their own ineptitude and laziness.

If race played a part in anything it was the major's realization that he could string the black folks along hopelessly and helplessly.

The hearings do not reflect the aid that was delivered to many, many thousands of folks hurt by Katrina. Is it the feds' fault that many more people were displaced by the storm than we have ever had? Why aren't we hearing from folks in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida who were hammered by this storm? Seems to me the only bitching I'm hearing is from folks who think the feds are responsible for their well-being, and not themselves. Once the feds figured out the Louisiana crowd had no plan in place to help, President Bush got the ball rolling. Was it a day or two late? Perhaps it was, but at least the attemt was made before hand to tell the folks in N.O. to get the hell out of town. I cannot feel sorry for those who elected to stay there, and that is their problem, not the federal gov't.

What I think really happened is 80 - 90% of those people in N.O. chose to stay behind to loot. Well, that choice came back to bite 'em in the a$$ bigtime. Now they are trying to divert the attention elsewhere.

Just my opinion. Maybe I'm racist? /s

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is paying an estimated $3 million a day for nearly 50,000 hotel rooms for hurricane victims. The agency had set a Dec. 1 deadline for moving families out of hotels and into more permanent housing, but later extended the deadline to Jan. 7.

The hotel program has cost the agency at least $300 million since Katrina hit on Aug. 29, followed by Hurricane Rita on Sept. 24.
