WASHINGTON -- Four African-American New Orleans residents told a House committee Tuesday that they felt a sense of abandonment from all levels of government when Hurricane Katrina hit three months ago and believe more lives and homes would have been saved had the victims been predominantly white and wealthier.
"People were allowed to die," said Leah Hodges, who told the panel she still doesn't know if her brother survived the hurricane. She likened what happened to New Orleans, and many of its black residents, to "genocide and ethnic cleansing."

With that attitude, why would anyone want you to come back?!
Their own incompetence was the culprit. Not racism. As a poster on another thread noted, even if you had to walk, 12 miles isn't that far. Some people won't lift a finger to save their own ass.
Wish she would - we certainly don't need her in Texas.
Dyan French is the former head of the NO NACPP.
Ooops, NAACP.
Barking moonbat alert.
She was going off on capitalism and other "isms".
Laura Ingraham has been playing audio of the testimony.
The woman appears to oppose "optimism" but embrace "Marxism".
Do these idiots realize that the more they are out there b!tchin' and moanin', that the American people are more and more likely to slowly close their wallets and put them back in their pockets?
You have got to be kidding. I watched her last night and wasn't surprised.
Perfect epitomization of the 'victim mentality.'
I watched some of these fat-asses on the tube this morning.
No wonder they couldn't hack the walk out of NOLA.
Uh, the wealthier people, having lived their lives making decisions and taking responsibility for them and theirs, got themselves out. They didn't sit and wait for the gummint.
Somehow, I doubt that those questions were asked or answered. Another instance of worthless testimony before Congress. There's always been a lot of that.
Congressman Billybob
Note to Leah: IF you have the lowest recorded barometric pressure ever recorded in an Atlantic storm, and it jumps to a cat five with 175 mph winds and you don't have enough sense to get the heck out of its way, that is not racism, that is stupidity.
NO is noted as the most obese city in the country! A bunch of fat, lazy asses! I doubt most could walk 12 yards!
Nope...she's proud of her NAACP days.
Maybe next time they'll vote Republican.

I think this article came up in a google search mentioned on the radio.
Is this the same Leah Hodges? Former Black Panther?
The left says "question authority" but also question the agitator who wants to tear down the system.
How long before our visitors expect us Texans to wipe their butts too? Why Perrys approval ratings improved over this bungle I dont understand.
All that butter. And fried food.
Sugarbusters diet options have been added to menus but drinking lo carb beer is no solution. It requires a lifestyle change.
And who was it that ran Louisiana for years and didn't want them? And which party runs the state where she now lives? To me this is a big-time slam on the Rat Party, even if the MSM doesn't recognize it.
Same with Mayor Bob-White.
If there had been adequate places for Houstonians to seek shelter, they wouldn't have clogged the highways leaving town.
No, STUPIDY cost lives.
A new word from Leah Hodges, as in "da dogs dat shoulda been euphemized was turned loose on us."
Democrat, Rep. William Jefferson (D) of Louisiana, faces investigation by the Justice Department over a telecommunications deal.
Thank Rino Main Street Republican Committee Chairman Tom Davis for allowing this circus to take place.
Tom Davis caved to that militant congresswoman.
Being ugly and stupid is not attributable to racism.
Had Houstons shelters not been filled to capacity as Rita approached, maybe those elderly nursing home residents would not have died 200 miles north in a flaming bus inferno. I have no use for these ungrateful leeches.
Texans are big-hearted people, and like other big-hearted people. Perry's rating improvement is also due to his level-headedness in the evacuation of the Texas Gulf Coast pre-Rita.
He's gonna beat Ma Strayhorn like a cheap drum.
Well why don't we just throw some more money to these life-long looters!
bttt
Yep, Strayhorn is Ma Richards in GOP clothing.
"He's gonna beat Ma Strayhorn like a cheap drum."
I am grateful for that silver lining.
Katrina actually saved lives given the fact that New Orleans hasn't suffered a single homicide since then.
That would make too much sense.
Most of the people left. Because most of the people aren't social parasites expecting that everything in their life be provided free of charge and in first-class condition.
But the Democrats in Louisiana have succeeded in convincing a lot of N.O. blacks that they have no responsibility for anything, including their own lives.
"People were allowed to die," said Leah Hodges, who told the panel she still doesn't know if her brother survived the hurricane. She likened what happened to New Orleans, and many of its black residents, to "genocide and ethnic cleansing."
An act of God killed people. Let me ask you one question. Who finally saved you, was it white people? I bet it was.
just an excuse to cover up their own ineptitude and laziness.
If race played a part in anything it was the major's realization that he could string the black folks along hopelessly and helplessly.
Interesting point.
The hearings do not reflect the aid that was delivered to many, many thousands of folks hurt by Katrina. Is it the feds' fault that many more people were displaced by the storm than we have ever had? Why aren't we hearing from folks in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida who were hammered by this storm? Seems to me the only bitching I'm hearing is from folks who think the feds are responsible for their well-being, and not themselves. Once the feds figured out the Louisiana crowd had no plan in place to help, President Bush got the ball rolling. Was it a day or two late? Perhaps it was, but at least the attemt was made before hand to tell the folks in N.O. to get the hell out of town. I cannot feel sorry for those who elected to stay there, and that is their problem, not the federal gov't.
What I think really happened is 80 - 90% of those people in N.O. chose to stay behind to loot. Well, that choice came back to bite 'em in the a$$ bigtime. Now they are trying to divert the attention elsewhere.
Just my opinion. Maybe I'm racist? /s
I agree. can you point me to that post?
The Katrina survivors that were on Cape Cod complained that there were too many White volunteers.
Actually Houston is listed as the nations most obese city by Mens magazine. New Orleans is on the list but pretty far down I believe. Google it, it's not hard to find.
Congressman Shays, meet Mama D! She Fi Bata Cappa.
My wallet is half closed. If they keep this up I will close it for good.
Failing to take responsibility for yourslef cost lives. Nothing more, nothing less.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is paying an estimated $3 million a day for nearly 50,000 hotel rooms for hurricane victims. The agency had set a Dec. 1 deadline for moving families out of hotels and into more permanent housing, but later extended the deadline to Jan. 7.
The hotel program has cost the agency at least $300 million since Katrina hit on Aug. 29, followed by Hurricane Rita on Sept. 24.
