Murtha Says Army Is 'Broken, Worn Out'

LATROBE, Pa. - Most U.S. troops will leave Iraq within a year because the Army is "broken, worn out" and "living hand to mouth," Rep. John Murtha (news, bio, voting record) told a civic group.

Two weeks ago, Murtha created a storm of comment when he called for U.S. troops to leave Iraq now. The Democratic congressman spoke to a group of community and business leaders in Latrobe on Wednesday, the same day President Bush said troops would be withdrawn when they've achieved victory, not under an artificial deadline set by politicians.

Murtha predicted most troops will be out of Iraq within a year.

"I predict he'll make it look like we're staying the course," Murtha said, referring to Bush. "Staying the course is not a policy."

Murtha, 73, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, expressed pessimism about Iraq's stability and said the Iraqis know who the insurgents are, but don't always share that information with U.S. troops. He said a civil war is likely because of ongoing factionalism among Sunni Arabs, and Kurds and Shiites.

He also said he was wrong to vote to support the war.

"I admit I made a mistake when I voted for war," Murtha said. "I'm looking at the future of the United States military."

Murtha, a decorated Vietnam war veteran, said the Pennsylvania National Guard is "stretched so thin" that it won't be able to send fully equipped units to Iraq next year. Murtha predicted it will cost $50 billion to upgrade military equipment nationwide, but says the federal government is already reducing future purchases to save money.

Murtha, who represents a western Pennsylvania district that includes Latrobe, was first elected to Congress in 1974.

Traitor, pure and simple. Just about every word he says is a bald faced lie. "Broken"... "Worn out"...

"Staying the course is not a policy."

Only a coward looking for an easy way out would ever say such a thing.

That, or a pandering politician looking to aggrandize his whithered career at the expense of the nation he supposedly serves.

Murtha is the Democrat's Duke Cunningham - the "hero" who's a factotum of the defense industry. Money spent on extended service for personnel is money lost to the military industrial complex. His act is lobbying for his contributors with the cover of left-wing rhetoric.

Just had a brilliant and dynamic young captain return from Iraq on leave for the birth of his baby. Coming in to take his Arabic language test. I asked how our soldiers were doing - meaning morale and welfare - and he lowered his head, looked me in the eye, and said, "Ma'am, our soldiers are doing...great!"

Here's a note to all.

Murtha is a selfish liar.

He wants money.

He wants to build up our military to fight a future war with China and bring jobs to his district.

He is angry that all the money that would go to build up our China defense is going to fighting terrorists.

He is liar because he is privy to the reports of the military that say progress will lead to troop reductions next year.

Decorated war hero?

Add a yellow stripe down his back.

That is a more suitable decoration.

Now is it okay to question this traitor's patriotism?
The only military folk that it is possible to criticize are Republicans, and those who are in active duty. You know the ones that according to JFK III are terrorizing civilians in Iraq as we speak.

Here is my Conspiracy theory about this.
Murtha is dying or maybe in the early stages of Alzheimer's.
The Democrats are using him as the mouthpiece to espouse the views of the Leftest of Left Wing of their party.
When his illness becomes known they will blame that for his irrational and unintelligent remarks
Oh wait, he is saying the same thing as the head of the DNC and the highest ranking Democrat in the House.......... Never mind.

Ann Coulter had it right last week - I don't care how many medals this guy has, he's still a jerk, and a border-line un-American one at that.
Republicans have got to stop falling all over themselves saying what a great guy he is - he may have been great at one time, (but so was Benedict Arnold).......

Last I heard, troops over there got to eat food for thanksgiving that they've never had before while deployed:

Steak, Lobster, shrimp, turkey, roasts, etc.

the Army is "broken, worn out" and "living hand to mouth,"
Translation: "The Army is defeated."

Only in a universe where a nation of hundreds of millions of people cannot sustain a few thousand casualties and still prevail, and in which this great nation will not provide resupply.

Only, that is, in a Democratic universe . . .

Jimmy Carter says a lot of our troops will never leave.

No, he doesn't mean they will grow old and die in Iraq, just that we will keep a major presence their for years.

If we can't maintain a low-level conflict with a couple hundred thousand troops over a 3-year period without "wearing out" our army, we are in sad shape. Of course, we CAN, and Murtha is wrong.

You're right...Perhaps we should have had a readiness standown to rebuild the force after 8 Clinton defense budgets. If only his brass hadn't told us they could fight an extended two theater war.
