(WSBT) The Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation is finding itself in a Christmas controversy

One grandmother says she was stunned to find out the district no longer uses the word Christmas to describe the holiday season.

Instead, it uses “winter holiday” to describe the December break and other holiday activities. Now Vicki Metzger has started a petition drive to bring the word Christmas back to the schools.

“I have many people signing this petition, because many people feel as I do,” Metzger told NEWS22. “These children have a right to celebrate Christmas and know what the true meaning of Christmas is about.”

Dr. Robert Howard, PHM Superintendent, says the district is not trying to eliminate Christmas. But he says as a public school corporation, it must be sensitive to all groups -- including those who don’t celebrate Christmas.

“We attempt to balance all those different perspectives as we come together to celebrate the holiday season,” Howard said. “Is it easy to do? It’s a dilemma we face annually.”

Metzger says if the petition drive doesn't work, she may take the battle to court. She also plans to speak at the next school board meeting.

"But he says as a public school corporation, it must be sensitive to all groups.>>"

NO, it doesn't - especially when we are trying to celebrate OUR "holiday". Why in the he$$ can't we celebrate our own holiday - WHY does that offend others??? If someone celebrates THEIR birthday, everyone in the WHOLE world isn't included, so WHY does everyone HAVE to be included when we celebrate CHRISTMAS?? Dumb, dumb, dumb! They're not changing the name of Ramadan, and I'm not included in that celebration, or Hanakuh, so why the he$$ can't they leave Christmas alone. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!!!
