Progress in Iraq
The Washington Times ^ | 08 December 2005 | Washington Times Editorial Staff

Najaf, Mosul and the Iraqi economy: These were the three pillars of President Bush's speech yesterday before the Council on Foreign Relations, and they are three of the best reasons why Howard Dean is utterly wrong to predict American defeat in Iraq. One wouldn't know it from the acrimonious debate in Washington, but the two former trouble spots are rapidly joining the 80 percent or so of Iraq that suffers little or no violence, while the Iraqi economy is looking better than it has in years.

It amazes me how the Dems always compare Iraq to Viet Nam. Let's not forget which Party got us into Nam, waged the war and which one got us out. If the Dems would have known how to wage a real WAR (not a police action) we could have ended Nam in a matter of months. Let's thank GOD that GW Bush is at the helm and not some Democratic, dope smokin, commie lovin, terrorist excusing, coward from the left. Bush is right, we either fight them there, or we will be fighting them here. As a Viet Nam era vet, I'm proud of our men and women who who serve, if the Dems can't support our troops they should at least keep their mouths shut.

Mom,

Zac has had a good up bringing. Terrific set of charts. They really simplify the good stuff and make it so that even a liberal can understand and appreciate the facts. Ahh, scratch that.

Thank your son from a vet and father of a Navy guy. Merry Christmas.

Thanks! But I can only take credit for posting the charts ~ they are taken directly from the October 2005 "Measuring Stability and Security in Iraq" Report to Congress.

Imagine having over 75% of any region in the United States thinking it was "best to register in vote" on any issue facing us today?

Americans are lazy and complacent compared to the New Iraq.

Not to be facetious, but the left is in a hurry to capitulate while there's still someone for us to lose to. The economy and the new government are the two main reasons that the insurgency is completely doomed.

Islamic radicalism and Sunni nationalism seem like a good idea when there's really no alternative. Now there is. If the Sunni tribal shayks can achieve their goals through political means, then they won't passively support an inherently risky insurgent movement. Likewise, the Sunni populace won't support an insurgency that often gets them killed in the process, when the future they want can be obtained by peaceful means.

After the upcoming elections establish a permanent government, the new Iraq will be reality. Saddam's imminent execution will mark the end of the old Iraq. The insurgency, or what's left of it, will be reduced to the hard core foreign fanatics, as the local Sunnis continue to abandon it.

The factors that allow the insurgency to regenerate will be gone within the next six months. In part, that will rely on us withdrawing to our more remote bases, and in part, it will rely on the Iraqi security forces increasing their role. Once we shift gears, our casualties will decrease, and the insurgency that thrives on our presence will wither and fade.
