To entice you to read what I posted on reply #60, here is the section on the bald eagle:

VII. Bald eagles

DDT was blamed for the decline in the bald eagle population.

Bald eagles were reportedly threatened with extinction in 1921 -- 25 years before widespread use of DDT.

[Van Name, WG. 1921. Ecology 2:76]

Alaska paid over $100,000 in bounties for 115,000 bald eagles between 1917 and 1942.

[Anon. Science News Letter, July 3, 1943]

The bald eagle had vanished from New England by 1937.

[Bent, AC. 1937. Raptorial Birds of America. US National Museum Bull 167:321-349]

After 15 years of heavy and widespread usage of DDT, Audubon Society ornithologists counted 25 percent more eagles per observer in 1960 than during the pre-DDT 1941 bird census.

[Marvin, PH. 1964 Birds on the rise. Bull Entomol Soc Amer 10(3):184-186; Wurster, CF. 1969 Congressional Record S4599, May 5, 1969; Anon. 1942. The 42nd Annual Christmas Bird Census. Audubon Magazine 44:1-75 (Jan/Feb 1942; Cruickshank, AD (Editor). 1961. The 61st Annual Christmas Bird Census. Audubon Field Notes 15(2):84-300; White-Stevens, R.. 1972. Statistical analyses of Audubon Christmas Bird censuses. Letter to New York Times, August 15, 1972]

No significant correlation between DDE residues and shell thickness was reported in a large series of bald eagle eggs.

[Postupalsky, S. 1971. (DDE residues and shell thickness). Canadian Wildlife Service manuscript, April 8, 1971]

Thickness of eggshells from Florida, Maine and Wisconsin was found to not be correlated with DDT residues.

No one ever died from DDT. Millions in Africa have died because of the fear of DDT.

DDT was not banned for Malaria control.

I also encourage you to read some of the articles cited at junkscience. Some of their points are misinterpreted and ignore a lot of valid research that contradicts their carefully selected papers (checkout their disclaimer on the DDT death watch, LOL). The truth is we do not fully understand the effects of DDT but there are some pretty alarming correlates with DDT use. To ignore them, well, is ignorant.

Again let me state I am all for responsible use of DDT- though those who claim DDT is completely safe and harmless are doing a disservice by masking the facts.

Hey kudos to you for posting some facts. However, why waste your time with people who don't care. I'm really getting to believe that some conservatives equate preserving this environment poison free as being liberal nuttery and we should have DDT for breakfast along with cigarettes and bacon.

Cheap plastic toys, the majority of Internet hack attempts, killer flu viruses, and now DDT... Is there anything that comes out of China that is of any value?

Thanks, I appreciate it. More and more coservatives are rejecting the reactionary stance of "nothing is wrong, everything is safe" and putting conservation back into conservativism. I think the 2 things that hurt conservativism the most with young people is the stance on the environment and evolution.

I lived in a DDT environment in he Canal Zone. The DDT truck used to come around at dinner time and spray all over the houses and on to the food.

No one who lived in the Canal Zone has died of DDT poisoning. Studies continue on us today.

Personally, I don't believe in evolution but I do think that not enough rational discussion occurs about alternative views. We're letting the far religious rightists take over the discussion instead of rational conservativess pointing out the facts (Pat Robertson is an example of a far rightist). I also agree that environmental issues is a sticking point with many young people and conservatives.

Bacon is mostly artery clogging saturated fat. Why would someone want to eat that?

The 2 things that hurt conservatism with young people is left-wing indoctrination in schools and the fact that most young people are ignorant. When they finally come around they'll see that conservatives don't want to destroy the Earth and they'll become conservatives themselves.

I believe certain aspects of evolution- others i feel i have a pretty good guess. The truth is there is very little "fact" regarding evolution so there is room for new ideas or old ideas an be completely thrown out. All we can do is hold it to strict scientific standards and rely on probablities until new evidence presents itself. It's not so much belief or disbelief in evolution, its more the honest discussion regarding it. Alright I need to go beat a snowstorm....

I don't agree with that at all. I think its in the nature of young people to rebel against that type of indoctrination- I know I did along with many of my friends. The problem is in getting the message out that most conservatives don't want to destroy the earth. What would some moderate young person think after visiting here? Ok, i really need to go...
