LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Two brothers died within minutes of each other early Wednesday in separate traffic crashes in a rural county where their father is a sheriff's deputy.
Rory McDowell, 23, and Cory McDowell, 21, were pronounced dead a couple of miles from the home they shared with their father, Andy McDowell, in southwestern Kentucky's Warren County.
Andy McDowell was not on duty at the time but was taken to Rory's crash. He later was driven past Cory's fiery crash, not knowing his younger son was involved in it.
"You take the most unimaginable hell that a parent could be told and double that," Warren County Deputy Coroner Dwayne Lawrence said.
The brothers didn't have any other siblings, he said.
Rory McDowell lost control of his pickup truck coming out of a curve and the vehicle struck a tree shortly before 1:30 a.m., authorities said.
About 15 minutes later, Cory McDowell's 1984 Porsche veered off another rural road, went into a spin, struck a tree and burst into flames, authorities said.
The crashes remained under investigation, police said.
Authorities said the father had always doted on his sons. "That's all he talked about was his boys," said sheriff's department Sgt. Tim Meyer. "He lived for his boys."
Warren County is about 110 miles southwest of Louisville.
Aww heck...lots of prayers for this guy, indeed.
Heartbreaking.
Oh, no. That poor man.
Too strange for words. We had a case here in the Philly suburbs a few years back where a mother had an accident (minor) and a few hours later, her daughter was killed in an accident very near that spot. But to have two sons to die like this so close together?

My prayer goes to the dad... (BTW, where's the mum?)
Sorry about that. I copied the headline and searched.
Just damn!
Prayers up for this devastated father.
Last week there was a story of two sisters in separate cars that died when they had a head-on collision with each other. If I remember correctly, they were traveling to each others house.
How awful. I cannot imagine that happening to me. Prayers for the dad.
This is just beyond words.
Prayers for the Dad.
jeez louise, the tears started just from reading the headline..
How horrible...prayers up for Mr. McDowell...talk about hell on earth.
Just damn. (to borrow a phrase)
Small town where I grew up, a younger friend of mine, he was 21, raised his dumptruck bed up into power lines behind their family home, as he burst into flames, his 19 yo sister ran from the house to him and was electrocuted 50 feet before she reached him.
That aged everyone in the community by 20 years.
Maybe they drove crazy because they didn't think they could get in trouble because their Dad was the Sherrif.
Ripleys Believe it or Not.
That aged everyone in the community by 20 years.
It's hard to imagine how a family even begins to cope with something like that........
Maybe he should have given them tickets for speeding at some point.
Prayers for the poor Father.
And the accidents where completely unrelated yet minutes apart...imagine the incredible odds of that happening!
