SAN FRANCISCO -- Earth's north magnetic pole is drifting from North America at such a clip that it could end up in Siberia in the next 50 years, scientists said Thursday.

Despite accelerated movement over the past century, the possibility that Earth's fading magnetic field will collapse or that the magnetic poles will flip is remote. But the shift could mean that Alaska may no longer be able to see the high-altitude shimmering displays of colorful lights called the aurora borealis, or northern lights.

Scientists have long known that magnetic poles migrate and in rare cases, swap places. But exactly

Actually I'm living about 100 ft above sea level but there is a 1000 mile island blocking tsunamis.

I'm on the northern most extent of the San Andreas and Cascadia faults and I can see Mt Baker from my apartment.
Mt Shasta and Mt St Helens are not far away.

It is fault of smokers. The second hand smoke causes global warming, this in turn causes drift of magnetic poles. Case closed.

Alaska may lose northern lights?!! Oh, say it ain't so! What will we look forward to during the long winter months?

They got a better offer. They will replacing Sigfield & Roy at the Sahara, doing 2 shows a day, with a Saturday matinee.

As long as the earth has a magnetic field, it migrating is only a problem to those who have outdated navigation aids. But if the field diminished significantly, we would be toast.

The Mayan's (and many other ancient civilizations) were tuned into the precession of the equinox, perhaps caused by a wobble in the earth's alignment with the sun, perhaps caused by the sun's binary companion. Whatever, there is an 11,000 year cycle that is synchronous with ice age cycles on earth. Ancient civilizations recognized this long cycle, and passed on this knowledge in myth.

Were it not for the current global warming phenomenon, we would be quickly entering the next periodic ice age, the age of Aquarius.
