Former Greenpeace Co-Founder Praises US for Rejecting Kyoto

Montreal (CNSNews.com) - A founding member of Greenpeace, who left the organization because he viewed it as too radical, praised the United States for refusing to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

"At least the [United] States is honest. [The U.S.] said, 'No we are not going to sign that thing (Kyoto) because we can't do that,'" said Patrick Moore, who is attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Montreal.

Moore noted that many of the industrialized nations that ratified the treaty limiting greenhouse gas emissions are now failing to comply with those emission limits. Moore, who currently heads the Canadian-based environmental advocacy group Greenspirit Strategies helped found both Greenpeace in 1971 and Greenpeace International in 1979.

"Canada signed [Kyoto] and said, 'Oh yeah, we can do that,' and then it merrily goes on its way to increase CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions by even more than the U.S.," Moore told Cybercast News Service.

Other industrialized nations -- including Japan and at least 11 of the 15 European Union nations that ratified Kyoto -- are struggling to meet their emission targets.

State of Fear is the most heavily footnoted science fiction book I've ever read. The web links he provides are absolutely priceless to anyone who wants to argue the case against global warming. He destroys the greens.
Of course, I'm in the camp that actually believes that global warming is real AND manmade. I also believe that we are several hundred years overdue for a new ice age and that global warming is the only thing keeping the glaciers at bay. So I say "throw another log on the fire!"

I would recommend anyone who enjoyed State of Fear should also read Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Michael Flynn's book Fallen Angels (available for free download as an ebook from the Baen free library). More "out there" SF than Crichton's book (not that much) and a lot more tongue in cheek (everything is William Proxmire's fault), but very much on the same line. Fun read and IT'S FREE!!!!

Up untill the 70s the oil, gas, and coal industries were real slobs with the environment. After that they recognized that there was some real value in environmental reclaimation. They began to fix the messes they made and they made less messes. It wasn't long before competing reclaimation companies began to grow. These days the reclaimation industry is a multy billion dollar industry.

It saves so much $$ for them to be clean. When the left starts whining about oil spills, they make it seem as though these companies are out to deliberately pollute. "Ugh, these sick capitalist pigs don't care, bla bla bla..." I like to challenge with, why would these 'capitalist pigs' like this? The bottom line to them is the bottom line. Do you think that they like spending money, i.e. losing profits, to clean this up? The response is usually more jibberish. They seem to get very upset that the company won't have a spokesperson on TV, getting all emotional and whimpering about 'The earth is our mother and provider, we feel (sigh) sooooo bad about this'. I tell them they are simply being professional. Pollution, spills, etc cost lots of money to fix. Capitalism by its very nature forces efficiency, i.e. "Clean Technology".

If you look at ANWAR you will see that the footprint needed for drilling is a tiny fraction of what the oil companies would have needed 30 years ago. The early environmentalists were right about a lot of things and they were'nt the anti capitalists who call themselves environmentalists today.

Look at any enviromental protest today. You see far more anti-capitalist/Bush/American rhetoric and signs than you do pro-environment. That is all it has turned into is socialism cloaked as being good for the environment. No socialist economy as efficient as a capitalist economy, even remotely, yet this never seems to register with these idiots.

I can respect some peoples (read: not the socialist wacko's) opposition to the ANWR debate given that it is a national park/refuge. I tend to support it, but I also support parks and rec areas that are off-limits. But most people that I meet who oppose it, always go off on the alt-fuel rant and how the govt should fund it. My officemate at school is a prime example, yet her PhD is sponsored by an oil company and the end result of her research is a more wear resistant metal coating that will enhance oil extraction. Why she is not working on alt-fuels, beyone me.....

State of Fear would make a great movie, but it would need some serious... pruning... shall we say. There is an amazing amount of data backing up the factual presentation of his premise, but there are BIG problems with the plot.

I would love someone like Gibson to tackle it, but of course he's already dealt with factual innacuracies in a movie of his (the babe in Braveheart William Wallace supposedly impregnated was 5 when Wallace died, for example). Dramatic license covers all. Think of anything out of Hollywierd this last year, such as Syriana or Goodnight and Good Luck. Both 100% BS, but "it's the throught that counts."

Being a greeny isn't necessarily bad or wrong. I mean, who doesn't want cleaner air and water?

The difference is truth-telling regarding the actual goals of the organization: Clean air and water, so to speak, or socialist control of everyone else's behavior.

In fact, I'm a bit of a greenie myself. I hate it when open spaces get filled up with houses and people toss trash out of their cars. I hate smog. My solution is to live in a place that has wide open spaces, clean air...and litterers are the dregs of society and called on it. I leave cleaning up other parts of the country to those who have soiled their own nests.

Mary Wiper, the leader of the Sierra Club in New Mexico, died Sunday after being struck by lightning while hiking with friends in Breckenridge, Colo.

“This accidentâ€” it’s just about as random as anything nature can serve up,” said Lawson LeGate, the senior Southwest region representative for the Sierra Club and Wiper’s boss. Wiper, 28, and two others were struck during a thunderstorm. The other two regained consciousness but were unable to revive Wiper.
