MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- The newest police detective on Miami Beach won't be hard to find -- he's 7 feet 1 inch tall, and weighs more than 300 pounds. Miami Heat star Shaquille O'Neal took his official oath Thursday afternoon.
Local 10 was on hand to exclusively cover O'Neal's swearing it at Miami Beach Police Headquarters.
Shaq has completed more than 1,200 hours of training and he attended the police academy in Los Angeles before passing his exam. He said it has been his dream since childhood to be a police officer, but "winning the athletic lottery a couple times" put his dream on hold.
O'Neal said that since he is almost done playing ball, and because he has "been a leader, not a follower and stayed out of trouble," he can pursue his goal of becoming a law enforcement officer.
He will be working be working as an investigator with the child pornography unit.
Shaq is already at the Miami Beach police station at least once a week. His NBA career has made sure his salary isn't a concern, which is good, since right now his pay as a reserve officer is $1.
Way to go, Shaq.
Shaq is an interesting character, I'll give him that.
It looks like he's been working at this for some time. I know I wouldn't want to have him chasing me!
It is good to see something like this coming from a league of felons. Can he arrest on the court now? The whole league would be in jail.
OH geez, I know O'Neal is not a common sort in the NBA but you go way overboard in condeming the entire league, when O'Neal is a PART of that league.
Take out weed-smoking and you're way off base with that comment.
That's interesting.
Since his "Shooting" on the court sucked...maybe he can do better as a cop.
He couldn't hit a free throw if his life depended on it. lol
Yes, but now when he makes a free throw, he has to face a review board to determine if it was a "good shoot."
I think this is a wonderful thing. Kudos to Shaq.
By tradition, a large percentage of police officers, particularly in large East Coast cities, are of Irish descent. With a name like O'Neal, I assume this new officer is Irish too, right?
Codename: Hightower.
Never been a huge Shaq fan...but this is pretty cool....
I think he is to be congradulated. I hope he puts his skills to use in a way that benefits the community.
Thanks. I agree.
Shaq attack
I don't know, I watched the show when he got Punk'd. He used the f-word profusely and tried to physically intimidate the guy playing the prank on him. (The air was let out of his tires after he and a guy argued over a parking space, Shaq didn't see the air let out, but blamed the guy.) He kept making a quick step toward the guy like he was going to rush him. He acted much differently when he didn't know the camera was on him.
I doubt he will be very accurate from 15'. ;)

Don't police offers usually do quite a bit of time on street patrol before becoming detectives? Good for Shaq, this just seems kind of curious.
Ha, that is terrific. What a statement for him to make. So many young people idolize him, and to have him chose Law Enforcement. It is just perfect.
By contrast, I wonder what Dennis Rodman is doing with his spare time these days? Shaq will always be a class act. It's an Army brat thing. Same background as Tiger Woods.
I don't want to be nearby, mind you.
Good for him, I wish him luck and safety in his new job. He has indeed always wanted to be a police officer and it is great to see someone with enough motivation and energy to follow through on a goal like this. Especially a person who could just loll around by the pool the rest of his life.

Shaq on duty with Port of LA PD
Codename: Hightower.>>>>>>>
I actually knew someone once whose name was O'neal Hightower!
Hate to spoil the party, but the article I read on the subject indicated one of his first arrests was for a perp that yelled "anti-gay" hate speech; it sounds like O'Neil has a depth of intellect problem. I suppose if you're 7'1, you don't need to be a great Constitutionalist, but I'm not sure this is a cause for celebration either, unless he can be educated by a Freeper or two...
