The 52-year-old muralist, like many others in this impoverished flatland, knows what it is like to mourn a relative killed by what he calls "the meanness."
He also knows, as everybody here knows, that Stanley Tookie Williams, the man scheduled to be executed Tuesday morning at San Quentin State Prison, played a pivotal role in plunging the neighborhood down that dark path when he started the Crips gang 35 years ago.
Badili, nevertheless, believes that Williams' life should be spared. He believes it, he said, for the same reason he scrapes together his pennies to purchase paint and bathe vacant storefronts and buildings with colorful images.
"Just like that mural is re-awakening the neighborhood, turning something bad into something good, Tookie is using his incarceration time that usually makes people miserable to make life better for others," Badili said. "Commuting his sentence could be the good thing that allows good to blossom here in South Central."
Badili speaks, generally, for many people in South Central Los Angeles, where the plight of Williams is on everybody's mind. An informal street-corner survey by The Chronicle found people sympathetic to the families of Williams' victims but no one favoring his execution.

My only regret at the execution of this subhuman son of a bitch is that they won't be able to bring him back to life so they can kill him again.
Isn't that nice of them to be "sympathetic?" Pathetic.
Any good Tookie memorabilia on eBay?
NOTE: you are bidding on a framed and signed original limerick created by FreeRepublic contributor Doug from Upland. Yes, that FreeRepublic; the one that took down Dan "What's the Frequency, Kenneth" Rather and partisan Democrat hack producer Mary Mapes for the phony George Bush documents they used to try to affect the 2004 election.
DFU is the author of "The Official Clinton Bashing Limerick Book," "Willie's White House Limerick Book," and "A Child's Eye View of John Kerry." The Kerry child's book mocked the Ketchup Boy gigolo without mercy and actually was given a positive book review by John McCaslin of the Washington Times.
This limerick was created to memorialize what is to happen to convicted quadruple murderer Stanley "Tookie" Williams at San Quentin as justice is finally served. The auction is scheduled to end at 12:15am on Dec. 13. To increase the potential historical value of the limerick, I tried to make the end of the auction coincide with the end of Tookie. Since I have no control of the procedure, however, don't blame me if it lasts longer. It takes the cooperation of the guys strapping him down and wheeling in the gurney, the person administering the injection of chemicals, and, of course, Tookie himself. Hey, if there is a power failure, prison riot, or earthquake, it is not my fault.
"Journey on the Gurney"
For Tookie, it's his final journey
They'll wheel him in on the gurney
He'll be screaming "Oh, no!"
'Cause he knows where he'll go
In hades he's going to burn-ey
The limerick will be signed and dedicated as you wish. If you would like it dedicated to Mike Farrell, Snoop Dogg, Bianca Jagger, Barbara Becnel, Rita Cosby, Danny Glover, Jamie Foxx, Harry Belafonte, or Jesse Jackson, that would be fine. If you want to make copies to send to those people, you have my authority to do so.
Lethal injection is the prescribed method of execution in California, however, the inmate has the right to choose the gas chamber if he so wishes. If there is a last-minute change and he chooses the gas chamber, I will write a gas chamber limerick to your approval or you may withdraw your bid.
If Tookie really does care about the kids, he will confess to the murders and ask for forgiveness. The best lesson he can teach to kids is that, if you choose to murder an innocent human being, this will be your fate.
It's good to have big goals in life......
Now that you've painted a wall, what will you do next?
Suckers are always gonna be suckers...
Screw "the community." Arnold's duty is to the public interest as a whole, and after that, to the victims.
Name the people murdered by "tookie".
Tell me about their lives, their hopes, their dreams.
Tell me about their families, their hopes, their pains, their loss.
Now, tell me why a convicted multi-murderer should be granted clemency, since a judge, jury, and appellate court have said "NO!!!"
Racially motivated, asinine, self-destructive, behavior that speaks volumes of the insanity of the entitlement-enslaved underpopulace, firmly attached to the Government teat.
Tookie will be Dookie.
Gangs are terrorists!
They should be treated the same.
Tookie, meet your maker
I know exactly what you mean, especially when I look at what Tookie did to Yee-Chen Lin face. She was the adult daughter of the Yangs, who were also slain.
Warning this is graphic. This is what Tookie did to Yee-Chen.
maybe Mr. Badili could do a nice mural of the morgue shot that was posted (and taken down) here the other night of the young woman victim, with her face blown off by dear ole Tookie.
Probably because the "victims" who do not have their names remembered were white and asian. And only white people can be racist.
You know, they still might be afraid of him. Officer Lt. Crittendon, the spokesman for San Quentin prison where Tookie is housed on death row, said that Tookie still associates with Crips inmates in prison and is involved in gang activities outside. Tookie has never renounced his gang membership, has not gone through gang debriefing, is not remorseful, never admitted guilt to any crimes and has never apologized to the families of his victims.
Maybe the home boys still fear the return of the most notorious gangster in South Central. Just a thought. Maybe after Tookie takes his drug overdose on Tuesday the street my be a little more forthcoming with how they really feel about Tookie. Doubt it though.
Maybe I've missed something, but suddenly "tookie's plight" has become a threat of violence...up 'till now it was simply a matter of justice versus 'good lawyering'.
Surely the governor will not allow Tookie to be executed on Jamie Foxx's birthday!
