Well, more power to them in developing a strong civil society. Without it they will fail all enthusiasms notwithstanding, and with it they'll succeed.

"He also described an independent Kosovo as a bulwark against Islamist extremism, with Kosovar Albanians at least 85 percent Muslim."

He's got to be freaking kidding, right?

Lots of "ism"s, but the meat of the article is here:

The United Nations administration is identified by most Albanians with a deliberate policy of preserving the old Communist economy by blocking privatization, which leaves Kosovo with an unemployment rate above 60 percent. In confronting the U.N.'s occupying authority, the Kosovars say they find themselves in a situation more like that of Belarus, which groans under a neo-Stalinist dictatorship, than that of Poland.

Schwartz has, in my opinion, a rather heavy pro-Albanian, more specifically pro-Gheg, bias. IMHO, I'd take anything he said about Kosovo with the proverbial grain of salt.

I know his writing from frontpagemag.com.
He is Muslim supporter. When Julia Gorin (Jewish pro-Bush) wrote pro-Serbian (actualy neutral) yext on Frontpagemag.com, he freaked out!

Julia attacked Wesley Clark, openly marking him, and Stephen Schwartz allmost got heart attack!

Julia`s article in Spectator:

Article seems seriously disconnected from reality, but that's just me.

I agree.

I guess all the stories about the extremely violent Kosovo Albanian drug and weapons smugglers, and the ethnic cleansing of the Christian Serb population of Kosovo, (most of which I've read here on Free Republic), all happened in another Kosovo, with other Muslim Albanian Kosovars, on a planet far, far away from ours.

Because those of us who oppose the Muhammedan conquest of Europe don't give two hoots what Suleyman Ahmad has to say on the subject.

I'm just glad that they no longer post this disinformation specialist's articles over at www.frontpagemag.com

Suleyman Ahmad, Schwartz's chosen Muslim name, has a fierce hatred of Orthodox Christians. Fortunately, most Roman Catholics see him for what he is.

Isolated by the Albanian language, an ancient Indo-European tongue with no obvious relatives, as well as by the long-standing hostility of their rapacious neighbors, the Kosovars have preserved much in their culture that is old and valuable. But young Kosovar Albanian intellectuals and civil society activists are aware they have a lot of catching up to do.

"Kosovar Albanian intellectuals" "have a lot of catching up to do"? Hmm. Maybe they should learn first how to spell the name "Kosovo?

"Albanians are barrier against Islamic fundamentalism"?

Albanians are sorrounded with Christians! They and Bosnian muslims (also freinds of Schwarts) are only Muslims in Balkans! Its like a building a dam in middle of the desert!

So from which Muslims they are guarding Europe? Serbs sure arn`t muslims, nor Macedonians, nor Greeks.

Chapter and verse please.

Virtually every chapter and verse he's ever written about the Serbs. It's merely a question of whether you stand with the Serb Christians (which Suleyman attempts to lump together with the Communists) or against them.

It's your call.

Good article; accurate description of Kosovo as those of us who have been there know it. The business about pro-Americanism, the UN regarded as colonialists & the economic failures rings very true. Also, the description of visitors to Kosovo who are surprised at what they find would probably apply to a lot of FReepers whose idea of what is going on in Kosovo is based on what our little contingent of Serb propagandists post.

You mean like Zeljko Meakic, Ratko Mladic, Radovan Karadzic, Momcilo Krajisnik?

http://balkansnet.org/ethnicl.html
"Although Serbs were by far the most succesful "cleansers," all sides adopted this method in the course of war. Record ethnic cleansing operations were Serbian Operation Horseshoe in Kosov@ and Croatian Operation Storm in Krajina. Bosnian capital Sarajevo, which so far escaped the "cleansing," has been under seige for over 1000 days, with more than 10 000 people killed and 50 000 injured. Check here what various human rights organizations have on the record. At the beginning of 1997 there still are more than 21,000 people in Bosnia missing."

That says enough as to where his bias leans.
