not a surprise, but sad nontheless.
They just were showing on E! the SNL top 100 moments -- and the famous sketch Pryor did with Chase was one of them.
Classically funny and groundbreaking.

One of my friends is high school had every routine by him memorized and used to perform them for us at the bus stop. Always went to school in a good mood.

I know alot of people were offended by his humour, but he was the first guy who I thought was REALLY funny. Sure, everyone since has copied him to death (him and Redd Fox), but he was a funny guy.

Richard Pryor claimed a christian conversion some time ago.
Don't know if he stuck to it.

Does anyone remember when he played a cop on the 'Partridge family"?
He was a funny man. He had his demons. I hope he rests in the peace he was looking for.

Never much cared for his style of comedy, but he was much too young to die. (Same age as my dad.)
Although, Brewster's Millions made me chuckle.

Watching that right now. I missed the bit on Pryor and Chase. But looking at the top 20 so far, that should have been further up. Sad news indeed. Pryor was a real groundbreaker

He was a really funny guy but the filth became gratuitous as time went on and actually made him less entertaining.

I remember he had a kid's show on for a while. I really liked it. That's how I remember him.

His "Roots" skit is one of the most memorable moments in the history of stand-up comedy.

The man could be funny without being vulgar--when he wanted. Loved the joke on himself after his near incineration while freebasing cocaine. Says, Richard, "Yeah, I've heard all the jokes you been making about me. What to see a Richard Pryor impersonation?" He lights a match and moves it like it is running.

What strange twists his life took.. I remember first seeing him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. The man was so funny I nearly hurt myself laughing. He did some routines on life in Peoria that were hysterical. It wasn't just the words, but the delivery, the voices, the facial expressions, he was brilliant.
It seems his career came unglued after he made his anti-homosexual pronouncements at a Hollywood Bowl appearance.

I remember that as well...never thought his movies were very funny, but boy his stand-up act made me laugh in high school and college..always thought his stand-up was much better than Eddie Murphy's.
God, after he burned himself, he did a joke in which he pulled out a match and lit it and said..."I heard you all making jokes about me when I was in the hospital...what is this? Richard Pryor running down the street"
I will miss Mr. Pryor.

Rest in peace.
I vaguely remember George Carlin riffing on Pryor something like this:
"Richard and I have always been very competitive. He got hooked on coke; I got hooked on coke. He had a heart attack; I had a heart attack. He set his face on fire; I said, 'f*** that s*** and did some more coke."
To: Salo
Great comic in his prime. I'll never forget seeing his first 'concert' movie in the theater, with a mostly black audience. My brother and I never laughed so hard in our lives. We still remember it to this day.
Pryor co-wrote 'Blazing Saddles' with Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, and was supposed to play the sheriff role, but execs got nervous and demanded someone else, which ended up being Cleavon Little, who also left us too young.
