In Part Four of his new book, "Character is Destiny," McCain writes about his role as chaplain for Christmas service in his Vietnamese prison, and about a guard who snuck in at night to loosen the ropes that bound McCain, and then snuck in in the morning to tighten them before other guards could notice.
The guard said nothing while performing this kindness, but one time, in the yard, "I became aware of him as he walked near me and then, for a moment, stood very close to me. He did not speak or smile or look at me. He just stared at the ground and then, very casually, he used his foot to draw a cross in the dirt. We both stood looking at his work for a minute until he rubbed it out and walked away."
What line of work was daddy in?
Not sure how the story about his weight gain got started.
However, I am unwilling to give the man any slack at all. He betrayed the men left behind after his release.

If it's not true, why have so many people mentioned this, among other disturbing things about him? Scroll up and read about his little photo op at Arlington National Cemetary.
And dthe same people who were impressed by Kerry. . .are impressed by McCain. . .
I hope the Repubs do not wait too long to get the truth of McCain. . .whatever it is. . .up and out for public scrutiny; and well before the 'season'.
They just need to do it subtlely and with 'good taste'. . .
Hatred for McCain has bred a whole lot of lies, and the weight lie is a whopper. Ted Samplely (something like "Sampley") is one of the original smear artists.
I think more people doubt the intent of the release of the story, then the story itself. Though given the character etch he's created for himself it's not surprising his account is being considered questionable as well.

I remember his wife going on television; campaigning for his release; how hard she worked 'for' him and the other POW's. . .
Am wondering if part of her divorce decree, required 'silence'. . .

Okay, since no one has provided a legitimate source for the weight gain, I'll file it as a rumor. Understand that I took John McCain at face value for years, thanks to MSM. Heck, I knew they were lying half the time, but until I got online, I didn't know how bad they were lying.

I don't like him at all but I seem to remember reading this story elsewhere a good while ago. It's possible, northern Vietnam had many Catholics at one time.

Maybe his "faith" is what helped him in being about the ONLY POW who came out of his "Hanoi Hilton " stay not appearing to have eaten off the same "hotel restaurant menu" as the others.....
