MORE than 20 people have been injured and 16 arrested as race-fuelled violence spread through Sydney's beachside suburbs overnight.
But NSW Premier Morris Iemma said police are in control of the situation, after violence that began at Cronulla Beach in Sydney's south flowed over to other communities.
A series of apparent revenge attacks - including two stabbings - occurred overnight following the unrest at Cronulla, where more than 5000 people gathered yesterday.
Drunken mobs within the crowd yelled racist chants and chased down and bashed people of Middle Eastern appearance at the beach in an extended show of violence.
Police and an ambulance crew were also assaulted as racial tensions peaked.
A total of 25 people, including two ambulance officers, were injured, about 40 cars were vandalised and an Australian flag was burned during the mob scenes.
Police said 16 people had been arrested across Sydney and charged with 42 offences.
Mr Iemma today described the behaviour as "stomach turning" and said it would not be tolerated.
"I saw yesterday people trying to hide behind the Australian flag, well they are cowards whose behaviour will not be tolerated," Mr Iemma told Channel 9.
"That was the most disgraceful, disgusting behaviour that I've ever seen."
Mr Iemma said he planned to bring together community leaders for discussions about how to prevent further violence.
Police had the resources and the equipment to deal with the violent scenes, he said.
Police were forced to use capsicum spray and batons in their battle to subdue the Cronulla rioters, who pelted officers with bottles and stomped on patrol cars.
Later, a 23-year-old man was injured and more than 40 cars smashed with baseball bats in an apparent revenge attack at Maroubra, in Sydney's east.
A group of about 60 men of Middle Eastern appearance and armed with baseball bats smashed the windows of parked cars about 9pm (AEDT).
The group then clashed with local group, the Bra Boys, outside the Maroubra Bay Hotel.
A 23-year-old Maroubra man was taken to Prince of Wales hospital after he was stabbed with a sharp implement, believed to be a stick or nail, in the hip.
Later, a second 23-year-old man was stabbed in the back by a group of males, described as being of Middle Eastern appearance, at a golf club at Woolooware, in Sydney's south.
He was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Riot police were also called to Brighton-le-Sands, in Sydney's south, overnight to control a group of about 200 brawling youths who had reportedly thrown projectiles at police.
Twelve people were arrested at Cronulla. They will face Sutherland Local Court at a date to be fixed.

That artice is typical liberal spin. I believe if you research this you will find that the Mooslimes had attacked several lifeguards recently (of course outnumbering them) sending one or two of them to the hospital in serious condition. And the Mooslimes wanted the evil western women off the beach because of their immodesty.

Suggestion 1: Arrest, try, convict, and jail the Muslim scum who are terrorizing Aussies. Just an idea, but if you did this then AUSSIES WOULDN'T FEEL THE NEED TO DO IT THEMSELVES.
The riot is a direct consequence of local authorities doing nothing in the face of Muslim aggression, threats, rapes, beatings, etc. No wonder they're blaming this on the Aussies, to do otherwise would point the finger directly at themselves.
This has been building up for the past four or five years. Last week's bashing of the lifeguards seems to have been the final straw.
Well, at least they're not burning cars...yet.
I have the same question. I've read a couple articles on this, and it's very hard to understand who did what to whom when.

I saw some film of this today. Things did not look good. It seemed that the police who were trying to keep order were being attacked. It was pretty ugly looking. Hard to tell what is really going on with just short video segment though.

Australia hit by 'race riots'
Racial tensions erupted into running battles between police and thousands of white youths, many chanting racial slurs against ethnic Middle Easterners, at a beachside suburb in southern Sydney, Australia.
At least 12 people were arrested for assault and other offences and several were injured in alcohol-fuelled fights at Cronulla beach.
"People of Middle Eastern backgrounds that have been seen in the Cronulla area - a swarm of the crowd has approached these people with vile abuse," said Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Goodwin.
In TV broadcasts, the rioters were overwhelmingly young white men.
Many carried beer bottles, waved Australian flags and chanted anti-Middle Eastern slogans in response to reports that youths of Lebanese ancestry were responsible for a recent attack on two of the beach's lifeguards.
After an uneasy peace had returned to Cronulla, police said youths damaged cars in nearby suburbs and there were unconfirmed reports of a man injured in a stabbing and police stopping cars full of youths of Middle Eastern appearance heading for the area.
Dozens of police in riot gear were also involved in a confrontation with youths in the Brighton-le-Sands neighbourhood close to Sydney's Botany Bay, Sky News reported.
In Cronulla, one white teenager had the words "We grew here, you flew here" painted on his back. On the beach on Sunday, someone had written "100% Aussie pride" in the sand.
Two paramedics were injured as they tried to get youths of Middle Eastern appearance out of the Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club, where they had fled to escape one group. The mob broke the vehicle's windows and kicked its doors as the paramedics tried to get the group out.
TV broadcasts showed a group of young women attacking another woman. Her ethnicity was not immediately clear. Some rioters stomped on police vehicles and other cars. Officers fought back with batons and pepper spray.
