WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Monday he was appalled by the government's response to Hurricane Katrina, acknowledging his own responsibility.
"I was appalled that a nation as wealthy as ours was not able to respond as effectively as we should have and took blame for it," Bush said. "I mean, to the extent that the federal government was ineffective, I'm responsible. And I understand that. And now the question is how do we learn lessons from the response."
Speaking in an interview with NBC Nightly News, Bush urged patience amid criticism that the reconstruction has slowed. "The devastation is so big, it's going to take a while to rebuild," he said.
In his harshest critique yet of the response to the August 29 storm, Bush said federal authorities and other levels of the government "fell down on the job."

"You can call me anything you want. But do not call me a racist," Bush said.
Geez, how many times is he going to apologize for this?
If you would like on or off the Louisiana Ping list please FReepmail me and your name will be added or taken off of the list.
(raises hand) I know! Pick me! Pick me! Thanks, Mr. President. Ahem. I suggest we raise taxes, create more federal "preparedness" programs, and massively expand government power to relocate people, commandeer private property, and use the military to generally push people around.
Sorry, W., Bureaucrats are Dangerous to Everyone.
This cannot be today - was this stuck in cache?
Nah....today's article. The article is based on Dubya's interview on NBC Nightly News over the weekend.
It's all Bush's fault!
Maybe FEMA...
No, it's GLOBAL WARMING.
No, just a broken record repeating itself. LOL
I hope he never writes his memoirs. ("My Fault.")

With the economy roaring and with Iraq achieving another monumental milestone in the upcoming elections what do you expect the MSM to do? They need to rehash an old story that had a negative effect on Bush.
I thought he did the right thing - something none of the Dims would do - by acknowledging overall responsibility for the position. Can you imagine Klinton doing anything but pointing fingers at those below him? The Prez is a class act and his shoulders (and sense of decency) are big enough to accept criticism/blame as the leader of the greatest country on the face of the Earth.
God bless President Bush!!!

I'd like to see anyone handle a category 5 hurricane perfectly. Can't be done. Mother nature will just smack you down.
This may be a noble attempt to lead by example, but it failed the first time around, and it will continue to fail.
The state and local government that stood by and allowed New Orleans to flood is not getting it, is not going to get it, and never will get it. They don't care about honor and example, it is a corrupt entity and has been for a century or more.
All Bush does with this line of vaporware is embolden the scum to ask for more money. I hope Dub personally has pockets deep enough to fund everything he's promised, because I can and have been, and will continue to ensure that not one tax nickle from me goes to pay for these cretin's personal profit.
Sometimes leadership means mending fences with a hostile political entity out of necessity, but this one's broken and the "Plan" is in serious need of overhaul. Continuation of this trend isn't fence mending, it isn't leadership, it is simply kissing criminal a$$.

----I know what you are saying and trust me, it does sound like he repeats himself over and over but I guess he figures he will keep saying it until they stop saying it was about race and that is why they were forgotten. They, too, sound like broken records and I think Bush is fed up with the crap. He has repeatedly apologized for his mistakes and I think he was hoping the others who failed would step up to the plate. He knows he made errors and we all know who else had a hand in the failures of Katrina. I think he is "outing" them without saying a word about who else failed. All this is just my opinion and I am probably/likely wrong, but I do respect him for at least taking his part of the blame.
Which is Bush's fault, of course.
