Governor Mitt Romney will announce at 6 p.m. that he will not seek re-election to a second term, setting the stage for an expected campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, a senior aide to the governor said today.
The aide told the Boston Globe that Romney will announce that he will fill out his term, which ends in January, 2007. The move is widely seen as another step in his plans to launch a presidential campaign. His announcement today is expected to be televised live from the State House.
The 58-year-old businessman, son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney, has spent less than three years in elective office, but in that time the state has closed a $3 billion budget deficit without raising taxes, schools have scored first in national math and science tests and Romney held out until the Legislature gave him a tough new drunken driving law he demanded.

GOP nomination for what?
heh
Given the latest legislation requiring religious hospitals to make abortions available, my contributions will go elsewhere.
He was never on my short list.
Hes not even on my long list! (Which includes Giuliani...shows you im not a fan of mitty.)
Isnt he one of those dumb as a post candidates?
"Isnt he one of those dumb as a post candidates?"
i dont think he is dumb just not as conservative as most of us like
He will be one of very few GOP candidates who will not get the support of his own state. I don't know of a single person, who is not a lib, who would support him for President.
South Carolina would be his downfall, just like McCain.
Romney's View on Abortion
Endorsed legalization of RU-486
* Favored basic Roe v. Wade abortion rights, though would not endorse a specific version of the Freedom of Choice Act, which would codify those court-established rights as federal law
* Said he would leave the matter of Medicaid funding for abortion to individual states
* Endorsed legalization of RU-486, the abortion-inducing drug.

Personally against abortion, but pro-choice as governor
Romney was asked to clarify his position on abortion. Romney's stance appeared to have changed between his 1994 campaign against Sen. Kennedy and when he moved to Utah. He recently told a Salt Lake City newspaper that he preferred not to be labeled "pro- choice."
"On a personal basis, I don't favor abortion," he said. "However, as governor of the commonwealth, I will protect a woman's right to choose under the laws of the country and the commonwealth. That's the same position I've had for many years."

For safe, legal abortion since relative's death from illegal
Romney disclosed that he became committed to legalized abortion after a relative died during an illegal abortion. The disclosure came after Romney, who said he is personally opposed to abortion, was asked to reconcile his beliefs with his political support for abortion rights. "It is since that time that my family will not force our beliefs on that matter," He said the abortion made him see "that regardless of one's beliefs about choice, you would hope it would be safe and legal."

Typical elitist New England mentality. I'm listening to Howie Carr (Boston), and even his callers don't think he has a prayer. "Rino from Massachusetts Elected President"...not a headline we ever have to worry about seeing. What a delusional idiot.
I think he'll portray himself as socially conservative--against gay marriage, pro life, pro war on terror and
fiscally responsible. I don't think he'll be in the mushy middle at all--he'll leave that for Frist.
To nice, we need a mean SOB, who will tell the DNC/MSM to go to hell, and F off!
He's not TRYING, he is already there!

Yeah. Maybe they can find a gay Dem abortion activist...
What are anyone's thoughts about the current Lt. Gov, Kerry Healey? I haven't been able to find much out about her record.

Romney signs off on permanent assault weapons ban
- July, 08 2004
Governor Mitt Romney has signed into law a permanent assault weapons ban that he says will make it harder for criminals to get their hands on these guns.
Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts, Romney said, at a bill signing ceremony on July 1 with legislators, sportsmens groups and gun safety advocates. These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.
Like the federal assault weapons ban, the state ban, put in place in 1998, was scheduled to expire in September. The new law ensures these deadly weapons, including AK-47s, UZIs and Mac-10 rifles, are permanently prohibited in Massachusetts no matter what happens on the federal level.
LOL!
Romney's only chance of winning the GOP presidential nomination was if he got reelected in Massachusetts and explained that he is actually pro-life on abortion. By forgoing reelection, he has doomed his presidential run before it even began.
I just hope Romney quits the presidential race early enough so that he can run for the Senate against Kerry in 2008.
Don't bother, Mit.
Would he even carry Mass. in a general election? That could be as embarassing for him as Gore losing Tenn.
He's from Massachuttes and therefore unfit.
The same population elected Kennedy and Kerry.
LOL, LOL, LOL!
Okay, you can exchange pleasantries with Edwards when you do. LOL! - Oh God...
OH...Another one of THOSE!
He might have a better chance of running for Congress. There should be plenty of people torqued off by now in MA with Uncle Ted and John Effen Kerry.
You underestimate Romney -- he would be a phenomenal president and would be dramatically more conservative than McCain.
Romney? President? Did you know Mad magazine has a younger children's edition now?
To succeed in a liberal bastion like Massachusetts in the GOP, you have to play to the "mushy middle". Massachusetts is just the east coast version of California, they're both a lost cause in this day and age for Conservatism.
The upside of a Romey presidency would be hearing that North Korean dictator try to say the name "President Romney". Other than that, I don't see an upside.
Just what we need, another Northeast Rino Princeling.
STFU Mitt.
Stay in Assachussets, ya gun grabbing fascist.
He's against the Constitution.
Romney sucks.
I saw him on Sissy Matthews show, and he seems charming, articulate, and has a good sense of humor to match (he more than held his own against Matthews' incessant baiting and whining). He is personally pro-life, but said that he would not attempt to overturn any pro-abort laws in the Bluest of Blue states. Some folks would probably like to penalize him for not adopting a "by the book"*, conservative approach to governance, but he was an effective administrator, and moved his state toward conservative fiscal responsibility. His biggest drawback is a lack of name recognition.
* i.e. Conscience of a Conservative.
So he'll be knocked for supporting states rights?
He's a far better pick than McCain, and he can certainly defeat Hillary better than most republicans.
Rice is about the only better person, and there is no good proof that she will even run.
I cannot support someone who has no chance of winning his home state. So forgeddabout Romney.
In Federal elections, it's never close in Massachusetts. The dem's always win in a landslide.
We need to think about a candidates values and the electoral map when we support someone.
For this reason, I love an Allen-Rice ticket. Or possibly a Allen-Coleman ticket.
But definitely not a Romney-McPain ticket.
I'm not aware of the strength of his views vis a vis the Tenth Amendment, but I would hope not.
Really though, you need to deal with your serious anger issues before you either have a heart attack or stroke out.
Their is an argument to be made that Romney would attract Blue state votes. He would put the Northeast in play, do well in NY and put the midwest (Michigan in particular) in play. Thats a good chunk of Electoral Votes. Further a southern VP would help solidify the South.
On paper, a Romney candidacy makes alot of sense.
If you directly attack and subvert the second amendment you are against the Constitution. It's that simple.
My blood pressure is fine, thanks for your concern..
Romney spoke at the Federalist Society convention this November in D.C., and gave a speech that was extremely well-received. And that's not exactly a cabal of RINOs.
He's very smart. Probably the brightest of any candidate who will run in 2008. And basically a libertarian conservative. He's very much pro-war, and supports limited government on economic issues. Less domestic spending and lower taxes. I don't like his stance on assault weapons, but none of the candidates are perfect on every issue.
As of right now, I'd be more inclined to support him than any of the other candidates, though I'd like to see how he and Allen break down. But he's infinitely better than a guy like McCain.
No, he wouldn't, but he's already insulated himself by criticizing Massachusetts to out-of-state conservative audiences. I think he's fed up with the state, and rightly so--we elected him but never gave him a chance to do anything. The country as a whole might be smarter.
Provided they don't hold his faith against him.
I'd like to know who added "trainsrunontime" as a key word and what town they're commuting from.
Is it your contention that one can be for gun control and at the same time be a Constitutionalist?
If I recall, he has both a law degree and an MBA from Harvard (like SEC Chairman Chris Cox). Not too shabby. How did a Republican and Mormon ever get elected governor in Massachusetts?
Clearly he's angling for VP, to provide geographic balance for a McCain ticket.
I've heard him say that when he looks at the legislature and sees only 8 Republicans he knows he has to take some compromiing positions. Could't find the exact numbers but it's bad.
