CA: Governor, GOP say their spat is over

Sacramento -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Republican leaders, after three weeks of rancor stemming from the governor's hiring of a prominent Democrat as his chief of staff, appear to have patched up their differences in a series of closed-door meetings that ended Thursday.

Schwarzenegger and the chairman of the state Republican Party said GOP anger over the governor's hire would not affect the party's support for the governor next year, when Schwarzenegger will need help to win re-election and approve a major bond measure that is his top legislative priority.

Their meeting followed meetings with Republican lawmakers this week in which Schwarzenegger listened to sharp complaints about his hiring of lifelong Democrat Susan Kennedy to run his administration. Conservative activists remain upset enough over Kennedy's hire that some are suggesting the party look for another gubernatorial candidate for next year's election, and several GOP lawmakers have hinted that their allegiance to the governor's legislative agenda is threatened.

But on Thursday, legislators and Duf Sundheim, chairman of the California Republican Party, signaled an end to the tension.

"The Susan Kennedy issue is over," said Sundheim, who had lunch with Kennedy on Wednesday.

Sundheim said emphatically that the party would back Schwarzenegger for governor.

One topic of discussion during the meeting illustrates the awkwardness that Republicans may continue to feel about Kennedy: They are concerned she will learn GOP secrets in an election year and asked the governor who would be their liaison with his office -- a duty normally fulfilled by the chief of staff.

"We received the assurances we needed from the governor today that there will be a path that the CRP (California Republican Party) will have directly to him so that we do not have to be concerned about what is disclosed to who," Sundheim said. ...

Schwarzenegger said Thursday that he had told Republicans he should be judged on his actions, not on his staff, but he acknowledged plenty of his supporters were unhappy. He said his relationship with the GOP was solid, however.

"..he should be judged on his actions, not on his staff,"..

Uhhh, never mind his green and gay agenda he so willingly is foisting off as bipartisan in nature. It's what the people want, yaknow.

The GayGangGreen is a small segment of the population in actuality but it shows you the extent that the left will go to to achieve its ends.

Hollywood is the home of moviedum tho so their efforts must be rewarded seeing as about all they push is a leftist agenda anyway.

The state legislature is at a near record low in approval ratings as they have been a main recipient of the left's backing and donations so..

The CAGOP took a reaming. Why, we'll just roll over, thank you. What you can say? Its not like they could have declared their independence.

Every one had a good swig of Kool-Aide and all was forgiven.

If Duf speaks for the party, the party is dead, imo.

I don't understand this, if true. Even if the GOP doesn't need to be openly warring with Arnold, it CERtainly doesn't need to be giving him a virtually "free ride" in next year's primary. Let him sweat a little, for gosh sakes. (I doubt Tom McC would switch from the Lt.Gov. race to Gov., but under the right circumstances, sucha as Arnold announcing he WON'T stand for re-election, it could happen.)

I always thought that Arnold and the GOP jumped the gun on this one - they should have left Grey Davis or some other Dem in office, until they ran CA into insolvency. Entering the fray right as the Dems were destroying themselves with spending ends up casting a bad light on Arnold, as he is left to pick up the pieces, and the easily-led general public (remember when Americans elected the Clinton crime family to the White House - twice???) does not understand lag times or cause and effect, especially with the media hammering out daily anti-republican, pro-Democrat "information." The GOP should abandon California and let the Dems mismange themselves into oblivion.

Schwarzenegger said Thursday that he had told Republicans he should be judged on his actions, not on his staff...

Like record spending, record borrowing, landgrabs, GLBT agenda, Global Warming, fewer than 50% (R) Judicial appointments.... etc.?

...but he acknowledged plenty of his supporters were unhappy. He said his relationship with the GOP was solid, however.

How does that work?: Supporters unhappy... GOP relationship solid. Seems a bit counterintuitive to me.

I think I'm living in Looking-Glass Land. A republican Governor hands the keys to his office over to a leftist extremist, and the head of the CAGOP says "No problem." Now lets get back to pushing that record breaking tax increase ... oops, I mean bond issue.

Schwarzenegger said Thursday that he had told Republicans he should be judged on his actions, not on his staff, ...

Arnold, your hiring decisions ARE your actions.

...but he acknowledged plenty of his supporters were unhappy. He said his relationship with the GOP was solid, however.

Further proof that the CAGOP and conservatives are not the same thing. Somehow the CAGOP has come to think of itself as something separate from the people in the party.

Don't miss the patronizing remarks from the Sacramento Bee coverage:
Besides meeting with the party leaders, Schwarzenegger on Thursday also gathered behind closed doors with GOP state senators to discuss the Kennedy pick. On Tuesday, he met with the Assembly's more strident Republican caucus, all of which led up to the Thursday afternoon session at the Hyatt. Later, the smiling governor told reporters that he and the state GOP apparatus are moving into next year's political season on a unified front.

"Everybody seemed to be satisfied about the decision ... and the direction we are going to go in the future, and like I said, it is always good when people are dissatisfied that we get together and meet and express our point of views, and that is exactly what has happened today," Schwarzenegger said.

As for the Republican activists he met with Thursday, Schwarzenegger said, "I love those guys. They're great guys. They are hard-working people. I've seen those faces that were sitting in there during the recall when I went around and up and down the state. ... Those were important people in there. I have the utmost respect for them, and we hope we can do this more often."

Schwarzenegger repeated that Republicans "should judge me based on my action rather than based on who I hire." people in there. I have the utmost respect for them, and we hope we can do this more often."

I'm sorry but I'm suffering from serious Schwartzenegger/Swooner fatigue. The CAGOP is quickly becoming the laughingstock of Sacramento!!! They're all Arnold's whores! (except for Barbara Albee who wisely didn't attend and get filthy)
