Sen. Cornyn: Filibuster of PATRIOT Act "a Return to Pre-9/11 Mindset"
NRO: The Corner ^ | December 16, 2005 | John Cornyn

Posted on 12/16/2005 10:02:11 AM PST by West Coast Conservative

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a former Texas Supreme Court justice, made the following statement Friday regarding the filibuster of the PATRIOT Act:

“By choosing to filibuster the Patriot Act, critical law enforcement tools will lapse, investigations into terrorist activities will be halted. The Senate action today will weaken our country by reverting to September 10th tools for our law enforcement agencies.

“We can not complain about failures to connect the dots, and then vote to take away the tools necessary to connect them.

“The vote today was a vote to move back to a pre 9/11 mindset. This vote must be undone. We must give law enforcement the tools they need, with the safeguards we all demand.”

Sen. Cornyn chairs the Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship, and is the only former judge on the committee. He served previously as Texas Supreme Court Justice, Texas Attorney General, and Bexar County District Judge.

I'm glad it hasn't been made permanent.

Cornyn is one of the Socialist Community of North America advocates.

He's not on the side of liberty.

"We must give law enforcement the tools they need, with the safeguards we all demand.”

Don't know why the Repubs want the "Patriot" act permanent. Might try limiting the "Patriot" act to terrorism too.

what is wrong with the Republicans in the Senate?
Have they turned yellow? or should I say, have they been
taking French lessons? One would think that with the American uprising against Happy Holidays, that the senators would show a bit more courage. The people are awakening.

Seems that Senator Sununu is worried about us connecting the dots.

Does he have something he'd rather not be found out? Is he worried about arab compatriots?

"Define terrorism."

A dare!

How about "not necessarily money laundering." The Patriot Act, so named because of doubts it was, is not limited to terrorism. It includes "money laundering" which can be and is used as pretext for most any "crime" thought to involve transfer of money.

The Dems are obsessed with the library provision. There's worse.

Did our side give up again?

They sure did.

I can tell you this: If anyone in my family is injured or killed in a terrorist act in this country because of these morons in the Senate, I will hold the Senate responsible and take my vengeance on them.

"By choosing to filibuster the Patriot Act, critical law enforcement tools will lapse, investigations into terrorist activities will be halted."

That's a pretty bald faced lie even for a politician.

A couple of the 9/11 skyjackers used their library accounts to purchase their airline tickets.

Now we just can't be snooping into libaries.......might find something that would protect our country at a time of war.

"A couple of the 9/11 skyjackers used their library accounts to purchase their airline tickets."

I agree. The library provision was intended to get access to library internet connections - public and free, hard to trace users.

So why add the provision about "books?" Libraries have jihadist materials???

I have a problem with federal authorties doing "sneak and peak" in my house, without a warrant, and never being allowed to know if, or when they did it, and more importantly, WHY! How ling would that be going on when and if I came home and cought someone in my house, and I shot and killed the intruder? Do I go to jail for the rest of my life? Will my family be without their father because I wanted to protect my family and my home?

I have another problem with the federal authorities being able to run background checks for gun purchase records of every American without a warrant. Does anyone really believe that a terrorist will follow the law in the event they want a weapon to murder fellow Americans? Only the law abiding and honest Americans will be violated.

I don't need the government checking my business records without a warrant, for lets say, my political beliefs? Clinton used the IRS to go after his political enemies when he was in office, what would prevent another liberal to go after a conservative because of his/her political views? Have we all forgotten Ronney Earl?

Finally, No one really even read the Patriot Act the first time around, and after it was passed, then and only then, did many become concerned about the violations of civil rights of Americans. To throw away our basic rights away, is to allow the terrorist to win against us.

Just a thought!

"We cannot complain about the failure to connect the dots" says it all. Congress is principally to blame for much of our intelligence failures. A congressional inquiry - 9/11 Commission - is useless.

Yes and Larry Craig was one of the helpers for the left-wing democrats. So we can give up on the idiots we elected as Republicans to the US Senate. They have gone back to their knee pads and are down in front of their democrat masters giving them what they want.

Not sure about the books. Guess I trust this President. We are at war and the peacetime rules just don't help us catch murderers.

Guess all the 'connect the dots' whiners didn't really mean it at all.
