As part of our Thanksgiving celebration this year I took the opportunity to read my family George Washington's Thanksgiving Day proclamation as printed on the Times-Dispatch Editorial Page. I made sure to emphasize Washington's reference to "the providence of Almighty God," and his request that we "all unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the Great Lord and Ruler of Nations."
As I read his magnificent words, I was truly inspired by the expressive gazes in the eyes of my grandchildren upon hearing the nation's first President describe the significance of the hand of Almighty God in guiding and shaping America.
I started to read Governor Mark Warner's Thanksgiving Day proclamation as published in that same edition of the paper. I ultimately decided not to share it with my family. I did not want to have to explain the Governor's lack of respect for the true meaning of Thanksgiving -- including absolutely no acknowledgment of God or the Lord in his statement.
President Bush's Thanksgiving proclamation gave thanks for the love of family and friends, and went on to say that "we ask God to continue to watch over America." How politically incorrect!
May God bless America and all those who believe in her now and forever. Gary B. Burton. richmond.
Editor's Note: A review of Warner's Thanksgiving Day proclamations from 2002-2005 finds the Governor never directly used the word "God" or referred to a higher power. A quoted reference to "Almighty God" did appear in 2004, but did not appear in a similarly worded statement in 2005. When asked to comment, the Governor's press secretary Kevin Hall responded: "Faith in God is a common bond most Virginians share. The Governor's proclamations have called on all Virginians to give thanks in ways that reflect their personal spiritual beliefs."
He is now spending like a drunken sailor. Sorry to all of you drunken sailors for that comment!
You know what's even scarier? A lot of former Reagan administration officials are getting behind Warner. They see no chance of a Republican president in 2008 so they're supporting Warner as a way of avoiding Hillary.
You need to get out of DC now!
That thinking is inbred and it's going to destroy us all!
See the 5th column Senate vote on the Patriot Act today!
Don't you just love beltway republicans.
I just do not understand what folks see in Mark Warner. He is a snake (think Bill Clinton) without Southern flair.
I am still mystified about how he managed that tax increase in a House of Delegates dominated by Republicans - and why many people believe that the resulting huge surplus of tax payer dollars is a good thing.
Who exactly are these former Reagan officials backing Mark Warner?
I only have one name. The group are apparently aware of what the reaction to their support would be so are not going public yet. They're disgusting. I think some of them are among the old-line Republicans who did not support the War or President Bush, and now they are starting to have egg on their collective face.
Doing my best. But there are some little considerations like the need to earn a living, the need to keep the kids within reasonable distance of their father, need to stay in the health-care catchment area of the insurance carrier, etc. Trying to get to Virginia. . .
