TIMES 'EXPOSED' (readers not told NYT's NSA story excerpted from reporter's book)
NY POST ^ | December 17, 2005 | NILES LATHEM Post Correspondent

Posted on 12/17/2005 6:55:34 AM PST by Liz

WASHINGTON — The New York Times is under fire for not disclosing that a front-page story on domestic spying by the National Security Agency was excerpted from a future book by the reporter.

Media watchdogs questioned the timing of the article....

The Times said it held James Risen's story a year over White House fears of endangering ongoing probes. But what it didn't write in yesterday's article or in a follow-up statement by editor Bill Keller was that Risen had written a book scheduled to hit stores in January.

Internet columnist Matt Drudge noted that Risen turned in the manuscript for "State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush administration" three months ago.

They are grasping for every straw in an attempt to silence the inquiries about the Barrett Report and Able Danger.

Rush was right, of course! Risen will have the obligatory 60 minutes push, the rounds of the Sunday morning libnut talkshows, probably a half hour of Commic and Lowder on NBC, a fake NYT "bestseller" listing and more fakery to follow. This will carrry him to all of...26 Dec, probably.

YAWN.

Yeah, the NYT doesn't do any original reporting. They just make it up or buy it from others who make it up.

IIRC, the book publisher is also part of the Viacom/CBS conglomerate, so the book, when published, probably already has a prime stop on 60 Minutes.

The NYT was slammed by a major magazine article critical of the paper's botched handling of the Miller/ Libby affair and of the publishing gonads of Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger Jr.

There's a sense that Pinch is tone deaf and not the brightest bulb.

Ken Auletta's piece in the current edition of The New Yorker does the hit on Pinch.

"Pinch" is a derogatory nickname for Arthur Jr. His dad, Arthur Sr, is known as "Punch."

Said another NYT staffer...."The entire newspaper industry is being rocked, and the perception is that you have a guy at the top who may not have the chops to deal with it."

When the NYT started selling off real estate few years back, that was a sign the internal books looked bad, and that things were going southward.

And speaking of the NYT's books. Anybody check those lately? }}}}}} enronenronenronenron {{{{{{

Properly timed for the renewal of the "Patriot" Act. How convenient.

I watched the Bush/Leherer interview yesterday and the first five questions were about the NSA story. At some point when Bush got tired of repeating that he couldn't comment directly on the story and tried to get Leherer to move on Leherer commented that the NSA story was the top news of the day. Bush looked at him incredulously and said No, the Iraqi election was.

Bush booked that interview with the Newshour weeks in advance, and the MSM knew it was going to take place. He was prepared to talk about the Iraqi election confident the news would be good. IMO the NSA story was designed to mitigate the good news regarding Iraq. It does not surprise me the Times had the story for three months and decided to run it the day after the Iraqi election.

The Old York Times Motto-If Bush Bleeds, it Leads! This is nothing but a Book Promotion!

To think that they bumped the Historic Iraqi Elections for this tripe is unfathomable.

I believe that you were the first Freeper Birdy to inform us about the Slimes selling off their real estate.

Hopefully some republican activist group that buys stocks will ask the SEC for a full monitoring of their Enron Books.

Yes, not only did it mitigate the good news regarding Iraq, but it also conveniently provides a smoke screen so that the Sunday talk shows will focus entirely on this story" and not the success of the election.
