The list of discarded theories is almost endless.
The luminiferous ether, imbalance of the humors as causing disease (and the collary use of bleeding and leechs), geocentric universe, intellectual acumen of Bill Clinton, ect.
Other than published pictures of the Earth from space, what direct evidence do you have that the Earth is not flat?

In reality, the word infer is somewhere means something between concluding, generalizing and guessing.
Often its a combination of all three.
I would not have had a problem with that first sentence if it was not stated as "Scientists believe that sunspots have been more common in the past seven decades than at any time in the last 8,000 years..."
BTW, the meteorologist "inferred" last week that we in Michigan were going to have the biggest snow storm in 30 years. Care to hear how that "inference" went?

They were hiding under the bed, but I've moved them into the closet.

Oh...I don't know about that. Bush can do a lot of things you know, but I think he just might be too dumb to do this. Stuff like this needs a real brain....like Cheney.
Cheney thought it up and pulled the strings so Bush would do it.

Sheesh.

They studied c14 in fossilized trees. Higher c14 means few spots, low c14 means more sunspots.

Best diet in the world, guaranteed to make you lose your lunch (or breakfast, or dinner). Just post that pic on your fridge and you will never want to eat again.

Am I the only one who doubts that we humans have been recording sunspot activity for 8000 years? It's what the Germans would have us think.

The research could eventually help scientists understand why the climate has changed in the past and allow for better predictions of future change. Modern climate scientists are way too passive. Did scientists in the Old West study river beds to predict when the rivers would flow again? Did they advocate sipping water more carefully and promote a UN tax on water use? Or did they research how to build dams, wells, and flood control? I don't want to predict the future climate. I want to actively control the situation with technology.
Ski resorts now use snow machines to blanket the mountains white as they see fit, not waiting for mother nature. If we can make snow, can't we point the machine to the sky and make a white reflecting cloud where we want to cool the ocean?

Isn't she responsible for those cave paintings in France?
