Yeah, probably enough to earn back the initial investment and make a nice pile of cash. $15 million is not a lot of money to squeeze out of worldwide distribution. It's less than Julia Roberts' salary for a movie. Less than the price of many Manhattan luxury apartments. Less than the advertising budgets of most big movies.

Kong was a sympathetic character in the original 1933 version, too. And the Dino DeLaurentis remake.

Brokeback Box Office
Stop trying to shove agendas down our throat and maybe we will pay for movies again someday.

Excellent rebuttal points.

But here's another point for my position: if we don't call them cowboys, that means no more "gay cowboys eating pudding" jokes, and that will take all the fun out of the Brokeback Mountain threads.

"BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

Domestic Total as of Dec. 16, 2005: $1,726,000 (Estimate)
Distributor: Focus Features Release Date: December 9, 2005
Running Time: 2 hrs. 14 min. Production Budget: $14 million
MPAA Rating: R Marketing:$7 million"

With that budget compared with their earnings, the producers must really be taking it in the shorts.

It says Narnia has made $90.3M, BBM has made $1.7M. That's including yesterday, when it opened on a lot more screens and doubled its gross.

BBM isn't going to bomb. Its budget was $20M vs. $150M for Narnia, it's never going to come close to Narnia in its gross (how many large families are going to see BBM?) but no one is expecting it too. All the liberal married women in my office want to see it. Unfortunately it's probably going to win a lot of awards because gays are in with Hollywood and it's a way for Barbra S. and company to say "f@ck you" to Red America.

Its success on the few screens where it is playing means it's going to be released in a lot more places over the next few weeks, until they reach the edge of their market. It's not going to play in rural or exurban America, but it will be within driving distance of most everyone who'd want to see it, which is not where it is now (it's only in a few cities, almost all in the northeast.) Looking at these numbers is like reading the 2 PM exit polls.

Speilberg's "Munich" is the movie I am saving my pennies to see. It will be released on December 23rd.

Well if you like PC movies then you will like this one. Spielberg said himself (WARNING HERE IS THE BARF ALERT):

http://www.itn.co.uk/news/678027.html

Spielberg said he was very proud of the fact that the film did not demonise either the Israeli or Palestinian side.

"When we face terror we have to respond to it. But how do we ensure we didn't become what we are going after and that is sort of the key in our story," he said.

"One of the things highlighted here is that these people did not lose their humanity. That was very important for me.

"If anything, for me that is heroic, not a criticism. It is a reminder that if we have to respond in certain ways, and it is pretty clear that you have to respond.

"What is most important is that we never lose our perspective or out humanity."

Bad? Ooops. Just another slang term for gays.

It was too easy. I don't think the producers realized just they stepped into naming this movie.

Ah, being a Christian doesn't exclude you from liking Harry Potter. You have to let your imagination run wild sometimes.

I've enjoyed the Harry Potter flicks but not been a big fan until the most recent one, which I thought was great.

Looking forward to Narnia, I must say.

Regardless of the merits of this movie, the notion that 11k/screen is a bad showing is just ludicrous. That's an exceptionally high number - far higher than anything else in theaters today.

Put me down with the "Live and let live" crowd. The existence of that movie, and whether it succeeds or fails, doesn't affect me one whit.

And I here I thought that the public, by and large, was absolutely clamoring for a movie about homosexual cowboys. Shows you how much I know.

Anyway, they'll get lots of love at Cannes and that's the only thing that really matters.

it's a gay cowboy movie.

Cowboys don't herd sheep. Sheep herders herd sheep. The majority of homosexuals are not happy. Call it what it is: a homosexual sheep herder movie.

I'm surprised that Peter Jackson even bothered to remake King Kong. Was anyone clamoring for a remake of King Kong? What a waste of talent.

Do the math on the movie. If you have 7 million people in the U.S. see the movie, then it's a huge success. Foreign rights, broadcast rights, DVD, etc. etc. are basically pure profit.

I guess we won't be seeing too many gay cowboy movies in the future.

BUt we will have to endure movies about gay football players, gay action heros, gay cops, gay lawyers, gay mobsters, gay firemen, gay president, etc. It will take Hollyweird about a dozen more flops before it strikes them that maybe gay sex movies don't have broad appeal.

I'm afraid you don't understand how to read the boxofficemojo statistics. The movie has had the highest per screen returns of any film this year. In fact I'm surprised that the per screen result remain basically the same from Thursday to Friday when they expanded from 8 screens to 70. That translates into mostly sold out shows.

A month from now you might be correct, it may take a precipitous hit in audience volume and only take in a modest profit. But with a budget of only 12 million it's not going to lose money.

The producers of King Kong on the other hand, should be worried.

"...it's a gay cowboy movie.

That's it. Who wants to see a story about a couple of butthole surfers at Christmastime? I will take that blown $15M and create a business and some jobs to go along with it.

A lot of people think rich people are smart and got that way because of their intelligence and hard work. Not in this case. There are flocks of rich and stupid people who flood our senses with their dementia.

There are something like 300 licenses for Kong. They were well on their way profitability before the movie was released.
