Staff Sergeants Adrian C. Bowie, 35, Marcus L. Allen, 35, Derrick D. Eddie, 32, serve together aboard Camp Fallujah and share a brotherhood deeper than the typical combat zone camaraderie. Allen, security manager, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Headquarters Group, II MEF (FWD), Bowie, radio chief, 8th Communications Battalion, II MHG, II MEF (FWD), and Eddie, an information systems specialist data chief, Regimental Combat Team 8, grew up together in a close-knit family in Colfax, La. After searching a family's house for weapons and insurgents, Marines from Kilo Co., 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, react to sniper fire during pre-deployment training at Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center in 29 Palms, Calif., Dec. 13, 2005. More than 1,000 Marines and sailors from the Hawaii-based 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment are undergoing a month-long pre-deployment exercise in California’s Mojave Desert appropriately dubbed, “Mojave Viper.” The battalion will be part of the 20,000-plus troops of the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, which will replace the Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based II MEF as part of a regular rotation of military forces in Iraq early next year. From reacting to deadly improvised explosive devices to conducting searches through a civilian-populated Iraqi town, the Iraq-bound Marines are learning and rehearsing various “real life” scenarios they will encounter in Iraq. The soccer ball was one of many donated by the 7th and 8th grade students from Kailua Intermediate School, in Kailua, Hawaii. Photo by: Cpl. Heidi E. Loredo

Bring Us Home Again

He slowly came awake today
and he lumbered to his feet,
for it was just two hours
before that he faded off to sleep.

He donned the day's attire and
grabbed his M-16.
He headed off to breakfast to keep
him strong and lean.

As he walked down to the chow line
he kept a watchful eye.
He didn't want the enemy
to take him by surprise.

As the chaplin said a special prayer
on this very special day,
he kept thinking of his family
that is oh so far away.

He rubbed his left breast pocket
where he keeps a picture of his wife
and a letter from his daughter that
he reads most every night.

He fought back a single tear
as he stared out at the sand,
wishing he could be back home
with his family close at hand.

He shook his head to clear his thoughts
and then be on his way.
He's defending our great country
and has little time to play.

When he got out to the fence line,
his buddy by his side,
he exchanged a "Merry Christmas"
followed by a tired sigh.

He climbed upon the watchtower,
his mouth a tiny grin.
He said, "Merry Christmas to the world"
and "God, please, bring us home again".

GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS
