Need a link to "405, The Movie."
Now how the he!! did you find that?
I rock.
Ah, a non-pilot I see.
Did ya duck!!
no, it isn't a toll road.
LOL...that's a good one!
slow flight MCA in a 152 is 36 knots. I have done verticle landings in them.
When Hitler designed the "autobons" the worlds first super 4 lane hiways they were designed with sufficient runway length for an airplane to land and be sheltered from the overpasses...say what you want...the Germans were very bright in their approaches to national safety. Of course they didn't have a bunch of brain dead US Senators putting their country in jeopardy by challanging the "Patriot Act" with a fillibuster!!
.
Can't remember if I saw it on here or not, but there was a video making the rounds a couple months back about a guy who had to emergency-land a C210 Centurion on a stretch of suburban commercial highway--and did it, got the plane down with no damage. But rather than truck it to the nearby airport, he was determined to TAKE BACK OFF on the same straight, flat part of the highway.
So the authorities closed off a stretch of road, he taxied the 210 down to the end, ran it up, and let off the brakes. At which point, after a few hundred feet of run, he clipped a pickup truck on the shoulder with the right wing, tearing off a little bit of wing, removing an antenna and the side mirror from the truck. He then slid to the right, hit another vehicle with the wing, more solidly, and the 210 spun off into the ditch on the shoulder.
He still ended up trucking his Centurion to the airport...with a smashed prop, bent gear, and a crushed right wing.
By the way, is that a T-28 in the top picture?

Yes, T-28. He did a BEAUTIFUL emergency landing and we trucked it back to the airport (see picture, the pickup truck has a tow bar attached. The story is even cooler than it seems - Chuck Yeager was part of the formation flight and ended up circling overhead with another P51 waiting to see if he made it down okay. Then - took off and went on their merry way. Could you imagine the pressure of doing an emergency landing knowing Chuck Yeager was watching!? LOL!
Never heard about the C210 story - have seen a bunch of them make emergency landings because of the wet wing vs. bladder.
I've had two myself - made it fine in both. Had to pull the seat cushion out - but it was okay.
"Eisenhower made a design decision back when the interstate system was created to ensure that there were straights sufficient to act as jet runways in the event of a hot war."
This is a myth, though as a private pilot roads can seem awfully attractive as runways, and at my home field the only real choice if you lose your engine after T.O. is a freeway or road. But a field might be the better choice if you have the option. Powerlines, light fixtures, traffic, concrete dividers, alignment with wind, etc. ""
In the western parts of the USA, power lines would not be near the problem you are worried about. Eisenhower was right, and you can land lots of planes on miles on I-80,70,15,10,90,94, and lots of others. Even USA 50 between here and Fallon, Nev has lots of places a small plane could set down.
Found the guy trying to take the C210 off from the road. This video will make you wince.
