Few condemned inmates have generated as much public support as Stanley Tookie Williams, and so much post-execution attention. The final send-off for the former gang leader executed last week promises to be no different.

A funeral normally reserved for a dignitary or religious leader was scheduled for today, almost exactly a week after Williams was executed by lethal injection for murdering four people during a pair of 1979 robberies.

Among those expected to attend the funeral in Los Angeles were the US civil rights leader, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, who visited Williams shortly before his death; the leader of the black Muslim organisation Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan and hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg.

The service was to include a five-minute video tribute by documentary filmmaker Jonathan Stack and speeches by motivational guru Tony Robbins and actor Jamie Foxx, who portrayed Williams in the TV movie Redemption: The Stanley Tookie Williams Story.

Williams, who in the 1970s co-founded the Crips gang not far from the church hosting his funeral, later began a career on Death Row writing children’s books warning against the gang life.

Those efforts attracted numerous supporters who lobbied frantically for clemency, arguing Williams had redeemed himself. He became become a symbol for those opposed to the death penalty.

“If they think they succeeded by killing him in getting people to forget about him, they have done just the opposite,” Barbara Becnel, who collaborated with Williams on his books, said last week after his execution.

The service will be held at Bethel AME Church Los Angeles, which holds 1,500 people. An expected overflow crowd will be able to view the funeral on a large video screen outside, Becnel said. The service also will be broadcast on the internet.

In accordance with his will, Williams will not be buried. He will be cremated and his ashes scattered over South Africa in January, Becnel said.

Williams was condemned in 1981 for using a sawn-off shot gun to kill 7-11 clerk Albert Owens, 26, in Whittier. Weeks later, he killed Yen-I Yang, 76, Tsai-Shai Chen Yang, 63, and the couple’s daughter Yu-Chin Yang Lin, 43, at the Los Angeles motel they owned.

Just a little poem for Tookie..I did not write it but thought it was so very funny..May he burn in hell..

Twas the night before execution and all through San Quentin, the crips were protesting, and liberals were ventin'.

The cyanide hung by the chamber with care, in hopes that the reaper soon would be there.

The inmates were nestled all snug in their bed ; except for Old Tookie, who soon would be dead.

And me with my beer mug, dressed warm in my flannel, had curled up to watch it, on the Fox News Channel.

I set up my TIVO to record the news station, and thoroughly loved the momentous occasion.

It seemed lady justice had gotten her way, and that there would be one less savage today.

When outside the jail there arose such a clatter, the cameras had turned to see what was the matter.

When what to my civilized eyes did appear, but a lineup of actors, all liberal...half queer.

The misguided freaks drew some curious looks, as they proclaimed his innocence; clutching his books.

The tears then flew from Susan Sarandon's eyes, as she nominated him again for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The actors were tethered to an ACLU sleigh, all towing the line of the urban decay.

On Asner, on Penn, on liberal cop-haters, On Sharpton, on Jesse and other race-baiters.

Then at 3:01 all curled up like a beetle, Tookie cried like a bitch, as they gave him the needle.

When up from the actors there arose such a cry, they had failed in their mission, and Tookie DID DIE !!

I heard Bill O'Reilly say, as I turned out my light, Merry Christmas to all ... there was justice tonight !!

Hmm, didn't his ex-wife state she didn't know where he wanted his ashes scattered? I believe Becnel said the same, only that took it upon herself to take them to his African home. Of course never mind he'd never been to Africa and how the heck does she presume to know which tribe his African ancestors were from.

I have very mixed emotions about the death penalty (for religious reasons), but he was a poster boy for it.

This limerick was created to memorialize what is to happen to convicted quadruple murderer Stanley "Tookie" Williams at San Quentin as justice is finally served.  The auction is scheduled to end at 12:15am on Dec. 13.  To increase the potential historical value of the limerick, I tried to make the end of the auction coincide with the end of Tookie.  Since I have no control of the procedure, however, don't blame me if it lasts longer.  It takes the cooperation of the guys strapping him down and wheeling in the gurney, the person administering the injection of chemicals, and, of course, Tookie himself.  Hey, if there is a power failure, prison riot, or earthquake, it is not my fault.

Lethal injection is the prescribed method of execution in California, however, the inmate has the right to choose the gas chamber if he so wishes.  If there is a last-minute change and he chooses the gas chamber, I will write a gas chamber limerick to your approval or you may withdraw your bid.

If Tookie really does care about the kids, he will confess to the murders and ask for forgiveness.  The best lesson he can teach to kids is that, if you choose to murder an innocent human being, this will be your fate.

The good news is his ashes will never pollute our shores. I guess there's some comfort in knowing its too expensive for the murderer loving crowd to make an annual pilgrimmage to the Williams Shrine in South Africa.
