Anyone have any further details? This is horrible news for Coach Dungy. What an amazing man he is.
I just heard a blip on the radio...went on the web looking for confirmation.
Prayers for the Dungy family.
What terrible news! Prayers for the coach and his family.
Thanks for the link. I heard the blip on WFLA, but found nothing on their website, or on the SPTimes, Tribune's, Google or Yahoo.
From the link in #4 it looks like suicide.
This is on our local news website here in TAmpa. Tony Dungy is greatly loved by the Tampa Bay people. He truly is a great man and this is so sad.
Former Bucs Coach's Son Dies
The 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy has been found dead at the Campus Lodge apartments in Lutz.Fire rescue and deputies went there because of a call from his roommates and girl friend. A death investigation is underway--but the sheriff's office says there's a high probability that the death of James Dungy was a suicide.
This is horrible news; the coach is such a nice guy.
Suicide...what were the problems.
18 year old son found dead in Tampa. Medical examiner expects to make a statement later today.
Hank Greenberg on WQAM just quoted Sheriff saying "high probability" death was a suicide.
I hate the Colts, but love Dungy. Class of the league. Right at Christmas, this is just a nightmare.
Just read the news. My prayers go out to the family, as Tony Dungy is one class act. What a crying shame...
Oh no. I really like coach Dungy. He always seems to have so much composure and class. Prayers for the family, such a hard loss.
suicide = euphamism for drug OD?
We may never know. Suicides always go up this time of year. (...and no, it isn't a bogus statistic like wife beatings going up during the Super Bowl)
I don't know and of course anything's possible. Regardless of the circumstances the news is tragic for the family. Tony Dungy is a stand-up guy and I'm really sorry for him and his wife.
On a personal note, Coach Dungy , his wife and daughter visited my son in the hospital the day after Christmas two years ago.He is a fine man. They gave us a great Christmas, now are suffering this one. It sure knocks some of the joy of this one down for me.
Unfortunately this tragedy befalls other upstanding people as well, Brit Hume lost his son a few years back under similar circumstances.
"With anything that comes across my desk, if I pray about it and ask for the Lord's direction, he's going to work those situations for his glory. It will be for the best, and it will succeed. Maybe not the success the world would see, but success in his eyes." Tony Dungy, NFL Coach, Indianapolis Colts
Here is an article on his faith:
Terrible terrible news for Coach Dungy and his family. This is something you never get over.
I can't think of many more situations worse than a suicide by an immediate family member around Christmas.
God will hold the Dungy family in His almighty arms--may they somehow feel His peace that passes all understanding.
Living here in Indy this has reverberated through our office. It's amazing how much people here love Mr. Dungy - the sorrow here is genuine if not palpable. A testament to Coach Dungy's character.
Dungy has always been one of my favorite coaches, even when I "hate" his team! For a long time, I thought the guy was just "too nice" to be a great coach, but this season I thought for sure the Nice Guy would "get the girl"... but alas, I cannot fathom what he is going through, my heart goes out to him and his family. Speaking from experience, losing someone to suicide is one of the worst things that can happen to a family.
My first thought was "choking game." Often mistaken for suicide.
What? Suicide means suicide as far as I am concerned. If your comment means to imply that the young man ia a drug user, what evidence have you seen to support this contention? If you are not aware of any such evidence or allegation, on what do you base this assumption. He is black? He is an NFL coach's son? he lives in Tampa?
You may be right. What troubles me is the leap you made to get there. If you have information on this that I have not seen then I'm sorry for questioning your comments. In the absence of any such evidence I would wonder what would cause you to assume such?
Many, many people in the Tampa Bay area feel the same way.
Prayers for his soul and for the comfort and consolation of his family.
I learned a long time ago to not judge the implication of suicide until all the facts were in.
A friend's sister died, and immediately the word was suicide. After the autopsy, if was revealed that she had died as a result of a reaction to a legitimately prescribed drug.
He is remembered very well in MN too where he played and coached ball.
Tony D is a genuine good guy.
I had a sister die at age 2 in 1964. My father has yet to recover. Losing a child must be the hardest thing for a parent
what a heartbreak. Dungy just seems universally respected, can't imagine how heartbroken he and his family must be. does anyone know how old his son is? why he was living in Tampa? anything?
This is shocking to everyone down here. Several people calling in to the radio station have broken down in the middle of their calls. To everyone: Please pray for the Dungy family at this horrible time.
How ironic and horrible. Such a fine Christian man and such a leader of men yet helpless in the face of such an event.
Whoa, friend..first.I put a question mark next to my comment..and it's a logical question..Young black males are, very sadly, probably 100 times more likely to die from a drug OD than from suicide..and you'd expect, if possible, LE to try to cover up any drug use..It's a family tragedy..it shouldn't be in the media circus spotlight..
Is this the kid that's always on the sidelines with Dungy?
I have lived in indianapolis my entire life and work about a mile from the Hoosier Dome where the Colts play. I know a couple of Colts executives and through them have met Tony Dungy. He is truly a wonderful man, as warm and genuine a person as can be found anywhere. he did not know me from Adam but was so gracious and sharing of himself and his time that I an forever a Dungy lover. he is a true class act and I wish more people were like him.
This is a terrible thing and certainly something that Tony Dungy did not deserve. He is truly loved in this city and I know the citizens of Indianapolis are just sick about this.
Thanks for your comments about my previous post. It does irritate me, especially in this case that is so close to me, that people, with no evidence whatsoever, can make such assumptions about others.
We were trying to figure that out ourselves.
Yes they do ......... but that increase usually consists of older people who look back at this time of year over their lives and see a lifetime of regrets.
Ok - no, it's not that son. Just confirmed.
"made things worse" --- I will withhold my comment to you .......... other than to say to you that you may have been better off remaining silent on this.
No, don't bother to reply ........ just figure it out for yourself.
Dungy is universally respected by his church congregation which I know a few members.
Owner Irsay on the other hand has had drug problems and is devoting his life to picking the Indiana taxpayers pockets to fund his mansions, helicopters, etc.
