History? I'd like to read as to the "hiring" event...

Not countering you, just would like to know upon what you say that Pope Benedict "hired" this sinner, Bishop in SF.

Maybe there's a silver lining, as others suggest here...a homosexual advocate as Bishop in SF will at least get other homosexuals in his churches, BUT that relies upon faithful Catholics/Christians to then show them the error of their ways.

Could happen. Could also be that the guy is to retire very soon and an actual Christian will take his place. In which case, homosexuals in SF will stay away from the Church and the Priesthood, it is hoped by this Catholic, unless and until they defy their sin/s and confront their own spiritual dishonesty about the Priesthood.

Our Catholic Priesthood is not about being homosexual but you'd never know that from people like this SF "Bishop" and his sinful message.

As a former LCMS pastor's former wife, the LCMS has NO Room to talk. Try on this: My ex had 3 affairs going at one time and finally chose the 'child' of 20 (he was 12-13 years older than she). He left two young children (5 and 4) and a wife who was blind-sided by his 'I want a divorce to marry the woman of my dreams' statement. The pastor who married us wouldn't talk to him because this pastor was in an extramarital affair at the time and 'couldn't judge' him.

The only reason he's a former LCMS pastor is that he found a third wife (after his 20 yr old bride grew up, gave him twins, and got a college education) who is a liberal Presbyterian pastor who works/preaches. She's like 22 years younger than he.

Am I bitter? Only at the LCMS for offering me and my children absolutely NO aid and assistance while we went through the humiliation and ended up in poverty. He had the affairs and we got ignored. LCMS forgave him but no one ever asked us to forgive the LCMS.

I joined the Catholic Church because of the celibate clergy. I can never trust another married clergyman. Don't put all married clergy in one bucket? Why not, you want to put all priests in the same bucket.

There may be some "good" married clergy in the world -- Billy Graham -- a few others perhaps. There are more good Priests in the world than there are married clergy.

Married? Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, many many others who don't keep their marriage vows.

Celibate? Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and thousands of other Priests who take seriously what it means to be "married to Christ and his Church."

Yes, I'm generalizing. So are others who post comments. I'll put my Priest up against any married clergy for comparison.

The church is supposed to lead using moral superiority.
Instead they are using parish funds to pay for the sexual abuse by priests. Then covering it up by simply moving these buggerers to different locations. Still trying to stand on moral principles.
hard to follow organized religion anymore.

"The church is supposed to lead using moral superiority."

Huh? How could anyone stomach a priest or a church that claimed moral superiority?

The Church is composed of sinners. Even the Pope goes to confession. It leads by helping to keep us pointed in the right direction, even as we fail, seek forgiveness, and try again.

Once a year bishops emulate Jesus by washing the feet of the faithful, to remind us all that priests serve God by serving the faithful.

You are correct that they have been abuses in the LCMS. A pastor I used to know was "politely" asked to resign after being caught in an affair. Last I heard he had lost everything in the divorce and was stripped of any pension and benifits, which was mild compared to what most of the elders wanted to do to him (very old school district).

I can also go down my street here in Iowa and talk with quite a few who were abused by priests in the Davenport Diocese. It was really nasty out here, and the bishop of the time refused to do much. In fact that is why my wife attends church across the river in Moline IL. We could probably play these games all day.

My concern at this point is that this appears to be a giant test case. With the document on homosexuals in the priesthood that came out, this appointment almost seems like a "Get me if you dare" type of thing.

I want the LCMS and the RCC to continue to have talks. But things like this are often used as an excuse to NOT continue them.

"Great moral leaders those catholics."

Yes, a brief look into the life and accomplishments of Pope John Paul II easily proves that true. Even more so when you include those who work tirelessly out of the limelight as God's servants in places where holding to moral standards can and does bring their death.

I'm glad to see we agree on this.

You may well find out how many of us Catholics are utterly outraged at the sorry faggot-protecting likes of this new bishop. On this occasion, this Catholic Elk joins Aussie Dasher in reminding you gently.

Benedict hired this clown. Sounds to me like Benedict either (i) doesn't have a clue about the seriousness of the homosexuality problem in the Roman clergy, or (ii) isn't the conservative everyone thinks him to be.

Or (iii) he's getting horrible advice from people he trusts. Can you say Cardinal Levada?

AND, as Arrogant Bustard pointed out, some bishops are successors of Judas Iscariot, which sure sounds like they are fallible at least. Remember that references bishops. The pope is, according to Catholic definition, infallible on matters of faith and morals if not prudential decisions like appointing unworthy individuals to positions of trust.

"...During this time I was among them I saw something very repulsive, namely, one man married to another. Such are impotent womanish beings, who dress like women and perform the office of women, but use the bow and carry big loads..."

Of course, these same folks also tortured and ate each other, so why should the fact that they had homo-marriage be any surprise?

Also, I'd ask you to pray for the Pope each day. I surely do.

Me to.

I, for one Catholic, will pray that my Church conduct itself in such a way as to be irresistable to Missouri and Wisconsin Synod Lutherans. Meanwhile, we may march togather as separated brethren for all the things in our society that matter. God bless you and yours in this season of Jesus's birth.

Billhilly: There are more than a billion Catholics and so it would seem that an awful lot more people take the Catholic Church seriously than those who take billhilly seriously. This disparity is not likely to change in your lifetime or in God's.

Perhaps the pope is being very clever.

What if this man ends up being exposed in a big way as a huge part of the pink problem?

The SF bishop then would have to resign in humiliation - as that one bishop in Wisconsin.

And that would highlight the pink problem, its roots, and justify a hardline approach.

Not that I think such a circuitous approach is the best, but I am not in a position to know. But I would not rule out that this may work......

"Archbishop George Hugh Niederauer, soon to be installed as the new Archbishop of San Francisco, has told a local news outlet that he is opposed to the Vatican’s prohibition of homosexuals in seminaries."

This is the type of yahoo my pastor calls a "nincompoop theologian" and a "dissdent and disobedient bishop". He is showing himself to be in open rebellion against clear Church teaching and tradition, as well as a clear line-drawing by Benedict XVI and the real Catholics in the Vatican. Christ spoke about the wheat and the tares, and this carpetbagger is a major tare. He is about as representative of real Catholicism as John Shelby Spong is of real Anglicanism. Jesus and St. Paul also warned us of those who would be false prophets, etc. disguised as people of light. I experienced the same thing when I was Evangelical, and certainly when I was Anglican. When Jesus returns, that will be the ultimate and final clean up. Meanwhile, we are all called to be wise, discerning, look at the fruits to know those who are true and false. Yep, there are Niederaurs and Mahonys, but there are also Bruskowitzs and Chaputs. There have been the true and the false among bishops, priests, etc. since day one of the Church. In no way, shape or form do apostate putzes like this Niederauer speak for the real Catholic Church or real Catholics, all he and his type do is bloviate air pollution for the agenda of a bunch of whiney, loud mouthed, destructive minorities hell bent on trying to destroy the Church.
