Why unions are like terrorists

When I was in highschool, I got a job at a pharmacy, and was told that I would have to join the union. It was during the school year, and I was only working about 20 hours a week. There was a waiting period before having to join, and I worked during that period, but then they began to bug me about joining and paying my union dues. The place was a "closed shop," and it was going to cost a lot more than I wanted to pay, so I just kept telling them that I had sent in the paperwork, and continued to work there for another 2 or 3 weeks, before I quit. When you were making just over minimum wage (since I was part time), but still had to join the union, even if you didn't get any benefits, it was just more than I was willing to give up for that job.

A lot of heavy users of union labor. What you don't see are the kids of union bigs who work for the firms or the marriages, etc.

New Yorkers must not care much one way or the other about union-thug extortion, because they didn't fire their asses.

Robots or monkeys could do the jobs, so why aren't they?

Uh, because the developers depend on union labor as well as the bankers that also administer union pensions, which are sometimes invested in the developers' projects as well as city/state bonds issues. And because lawyers working for the union also work for the developers. And because the unions can deliver votes to the pols who depend on contributions from developers to get re-elected, who rely on the pols to get their projects greenlighted by city agencies.

But mostly, because nothing is as important as keeping the city running.

You want a blue print of power in NYC. One doesn't exist. It isn't as clear cut as management on one side and the unions on another. The whole thing is a web of favors, marriages, shared bankers/lawyers, who can get your kid into Princeton, building variances, etc. etc.

Seems like it just has to eventually break then, I suppose. Kinda like the out-of-control federal budget . . . nothing will change until the whole mess just collapses.

I got weapons and popcorn, so I'm ready for it anytime.

I'm seeing it spread. It's not spreading within the U.S., but on a global scale. Lots of money sloshing around the world. And lots of people following it. Increasingly, I'm seeing young kids (25 to 35) who make darned fine livings bouncing from NYC to Paris to London and then to Miami and back to Milan. Some maintain two or three apartments and have never had a landline phone.
