Google Mocks Christ on Christmas Eve
Confederate Yankee ^ | December 24, 2005

Posted on 12/24/2005 9:58:56 PM PST by george76

While trying to find a nativity image for my last post before Christmas, I did an search for "baby jesus" on Google.

This is the result.

Notice that the top search result is for a sex toy that mocks Jesus.

Other results on this search results page have more link traffic.

A quick review of page's code shows no HTML meta information that should give it a favorable ranking.

The page itself has a raw relevance ranking (search word divided by total words) of less than five percent.

The only conclusion I can draw is that this page position ranking was done manually by a Google staffer.

Google's message to the Faithful seems obvious:

"Merry Christmas, a******s."

Try doing the search in quotes... "Baby Jesus". It makes a world of difference.

I take that back...the ugly one still shows up. If I'm not mistaken, they number of hits a site gets ups its ranking in the search engine.

Well, its not google that is "mocking" him, it was done the same way people made that George Bush website show up when you typed in "complete failure" (or somethign like that).

Google has been mocking baby Jesus for a year or so. You just noticed it.

The blasphemous sex toy site has the most links to it, so Google automatically picked it up.

Don't blame Google. Blame the freaks who made all the links, and of course the sex toy outfit itself for existing.

Though what you say is troubling, it has nothing to do with google. It has to do with the people that add there sites to the search engine itself. I could run a porn site and buy keywords that have to do with electronics and computers. I could buy the keyword "Free computers" and have it go to some porn site. Google isnt the problem, its the idiots that buy the keywords. I could buy the domain freecomputers.com and buy the keywords "free computers". Once the person clicks on it, i can have them redirected anywhere. Its sad, but people are idiots. Its not googles fault.

Garbage. Google is one of the most liberal biased, anti-conservative, Bush hating search engines I have ever used.

The Bush bashing garbage I see on Google that is posted as "News" is beyond astounding. Google is jus pathetic in it's liberal bias.

The fact that you're computer-savvy enough to get on FR, and articulate enough to make a cogent post--but are unaware that the number/nature of hits has nothing to do with Google or the people who run it--is frightening.

And even if we grant all that as true---and I am inclined to do so---it doesn't change the fact that this particular incident has a perfectly credible explanation that does not require Google's deliberate input.

Let's not resort to the liberal "OK, it's fake, but accurate" cop-out, shall we?

Google knows that their site was hacked to pull up Bush's biography, when "Miserable Failure" is typed it their search feature.

Google knows it, has acknowledged it, and has stated that they have no intention of doing anything about it.

That's because their site was not "hacked". It was gamed---that is, people exploited the way Google's PageRank system works to achieve their results.

There's a big difference.

And frankly I agree with Google on this one. (Just this one.) I would much rather their search engine rank pages in a completely automated manner. It is minute they start applying human input to the process is exactly when the search engine gains bias.

Besides, if you feel any better, Michael Moore follows George Bush in the Google search for "miserable failure."

Google was never 'hacked'.

The people who did what you describe manipulated the way Google finds/displays results to do what they wanted, but Google was not hacked.

What Google did (or more specifically, did NOT do) was change their methods just to combat the hits from ONE specific search, and they were right.

Anybody that gets bent out of shape because of Google hits needs to get a freaking life.

First of all you should do a search for a picture in google images not webpages

Image hosted by TinyPic.com

Its like the difference of typing whitehouse .com and white house .gov

.com gives you a porno site and .gov gives you the government

Pornographers and other such scum will stop at nothing to flood you with garbage !

Your post is quite valuable. The fact that you would have the guts to bring a question to a forum like this is heartening.

Google is now a major part of the world of information trafficking, and we know very well of the bias embedded in that world. Not to mention the creeping growth of leftist tendencies within large corporations.

Keep monitoring. This forum will continue to shed light on such questions.

Heh, from someone who knows a thing or two about how Google works, I can assure you that not only are you completely wrong, but you come off sounding like a stark raving moonbat. It's a software engine that compiles its content and rankings based on a number of completely automated algorithms. Google's only popular because it finds what people actually want to find when they use it to search. Can it be manipulated? Like anything else, of course! Can you get the top search for "miserable failure" to link to President Bush's biography? Sure. Can you get the second result to link to Michael Moore's website? Yup. Can you get a search for "french military victories" to link to a parody site mocking the French? Sure can. It's not biased software; it's human manipulation through difficult and time-consuming trial and error.

When the day comes that software engines develop political slants, we'll have far greater problems than which side of the political spectrum the software chooses.

Yes! You too can be one of the 19 people on the internet who use Ask Jeeves!

Seriously, though, Google is vastly more popular than all other search engines combined because it is so good at what it does. The fact that people spend so much time and effort "Google bombing", as it's called, shows just how important Google is. The fact that a small number of people have successfully Google bombed a small number of phrases is irrelevant to the fact that Google brings me exactly the information I need it to 95% of the time.

I was interested in getting a cross section of views about google's search engine; and to learn some more details of search engines.

I believe that their news selections are generally very liberal and if one wants multiple points of view, one has to go elsewhere...like to FR.

I read the MSM all the time and very little of it compares to the degree and magnitude anti-Bush content on Google.

It's absolutely astounding to read the headlines on Google regarding anything to do with Bush. They link at the top their lists the most obscure Bush hating publications imaginable.

I use Google almost daily and wouldn't say it if it wasn't true.
