Attack in Russia poisons shoppers
Sky News UK ^ | 26-12-2005 | SKY NEWS

At least 78 people have become ill in a gas attack on a store in St Petersburg, Russia.

Dozens of people, suffering breathing difficulties and sickness, have been taken to hospital.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said the shop, belonging to the Maksidom chain, was among four stores targeted.

The mystery gas was released in one of the four stores, the Federal Security Service said.

Employees in the three other stores found boxes with wires and timers, but had managed to dispose of them.

The stores specialise in home goods.

More to follow...

Sounds more like an attack on these stores than an attack on the country.

And some say there is no need for the death penalty? That society should pay to keep vermin like these alive?

You can pay them now ... or you can pay for them forever.

The Chechens are in league with al-Qaeda, and the latter is well known for their use of poison gas.

Me thinks that counterfeiting perfumes has its drawbacks.

Attempting to spray samples on potential customers appears to be counterproductive.

Second story in a week about suspected gas attacks against Russians. Once the islamofascists figure out how to do this and start achieving mass killings we can expect to see these attacks multiplying in Europe and here. It's a whole lot easier to transport a few canisters of VX or sarin than it is hundreds or thousands of pounds of explosives. Plus you probably don't need to involve so many others in the plan so it will be harder to gain intelligence about these operations. I guess the Syrians decided to release some of the surplus from Saddam's old stockpile.

It is still early, this story will probably change 10 times before a final report is settled upon.

Personally speaking it does NOT matter to me who used the gas, sure sounds like terrorism anyway it is presented.

Putin appears to think he can pick and choose his good terrorists and bad terrorists. Iran and Syria are his ok terrorists sponsor nations.

Sorry for the previous ping.....appears to be a false alarm. Muslims would rather not use methyl mercaptan. They would prefer a nerve gas of some kind to maximize damage.

Updated story: "Local media quoted prosecutors as saying the gas was methyl mercaptan, a compound added to domestic gas to give it its odour."

Well but of course just like every other word that the liberal mind has perverted "business" means capitalism which for years has been the opposite of communism.

However, capitalism of the past had a specific meaning that made it anticommunism, in the past dozen years capitalism has been morphed into government run capitalism.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Merry Christmas to you, to, just yourthoughts...! :-)

However, capitalism of the past had a specific meaning that made it anticommunism, in the past dozen years capitalism has been morphed into government run capitalism.

I believe the technical term for that really is fascism. Try a dictionary from the 1930's - 1940's.

Full Disclosure: If you can find a copy, try reading Hilaire Belloc's The Servile State. He predicted in 1913 (even before the Russian Revolution) what the overall outcome of the conflict between Communism and Capitalism would be.

Cheers!

...and Merry Christmas, again!

He will blame everything on the FSB and the police, and gain popularity by the populist approach announcing for improvements that won't be made. The Russians' have been brainwashed by this tactics by Putin for years. At last he will highlight his economic succeess to dim his security failures, and create an illusion of successes when there were many other failures. Poor Russians for being brainwashed by the state controlled media. The oligarchy wasn't good, and foreigners should have played a better role to educate the media before Putin gained control. It's all late.

Only problem with that is that they have no WMD's. Ted Kennedy says so, so it has to be true!

I don't know, this is not "WalMart vs KMart". Consider if you were to believe that to go to store X you might get gassed, just might be the incentive necessary to visit store P.

I find it (the competitor did it) hard to believe too because they supposedly found out who did it too rapidly! They could be trying to quell terrorism fears.

Of course this would never have happened if it were government run! /sarcasm

I lived in St. Petersburg for much of the past year. Maksidom, click link here, is the Circuit City of St. Petersburg. They have 4 stores but do not plan to move into the Moscow market for some reason. Their main competition is M-Video which is all over Russia. I know the management at MVideo in Moscow. They are very professional and have Harvard MBAs. After, MVideo, the competition would be Lenta (see http://www.lenta.com), with 5 Hypermarkets in St. Petersburg and also professionally run with western-educated managers...and the German giant Metro (see www.metro.de) which is like Sams Club or Costco. Lenta is more like Sams Club. Maksidom is like Circuit City. I cannot see where the mafia would be involved on behalf of one of those competitors. This is interesting. It is also TERRIFYING because all my friends live there!

It could be the Russian mafia, or even some mafioso in the government who didn't get the kickbacks he demanded. Business killings are fairly common in Russia, although usually they go for the boss, not the customers.
