I Googled "Thurmond, segregation" and found innumerable references stating that Strom did indeed renounce his segregationist past. In fairness, I also found a few that stated he didn't, but those were invariably ultra-leftist nutball sites.

Dubya is trying to get the black vote for 2006. It's at about 8% now. If he's lucky it will be 10% by Nov 2006. As long as the evil Karl Rove doesn't explode any more levees in black neighborhoods he should be confident that the Republicans will get that whopping 10%.

It's hell isn't it? Black posters on more liberal boards used to cut and paste comments from here and throw it in my face when I argued that blacks should vote Republican. Sometimes I couldn't even respond. I think you can easily find the insensitive/unthinking on any political board. I'm sure I can easily find outright hateful stuff said about Christians on DU. Does that mean Democrats are universally anti-Christian? Nope, just their leftist leadership. I'm also certain you're a better defender of conservatism than to be stopped with the old "nutball cut-and-paste". Don't let the fringe element get you guys down. I appreciate your perspective on these social matters, even though I may not agree.
