Ballance to hold another fundraiser before prison term starts
Dec 26, 2005 : 3:37 pm ET

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Former Rep. Frank Ballance is holding one last fundraiser before he begins serving a four-year prison term at the end of this week.

Ballance, a Democrat from Warrenton who represented the First District of North Carolina, resigned in June 2004 for health reasons before completing his first term. He was sentenced to prison in October after pleading guilty to funneling tax dollars into his foundation and using $100,000 for himself and his family.

He will be honored Wednesday at the Roanoke River Community Center in Roanoke Rapids. An invitation to the event says donations are welcome and checks should be made payable to the former congressman, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported.

The event is sponsored by "All People Who Love Freedom and Justice," according to the invitation.

Ballance, an influential state legislator who served in Raleigh from 1983 until his election to Congress in 2002, is due to report to prison two days later.

Earlier this month, several hundred supporters of Ballance gathered at a Hertford County church for a farewell luncheon for the former lawmaker. Comedian and social activist Dick Gregory headlined the event.

Convicted Lawmaker Plans Goodbye Party Before Prison Stint
POSTED: 11:40 am EST December 26, 2005

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. -- Former North Carolina congressman Frank Ballance is getting one more send-off before he reports to federal prison.

There's an event scheduled Wednesday in Roanoke Rapids. The invitation says donations are welcome and checks should be made payable to Ballance. He's due to report to prison on Friday to serve a four-year sentence for fraud.

Ballance pleaded guilty to funneling taxpayer money to his law firm, church and relatives. Frank Ballance and his son Garey are now listed on the Bureau of Prisons website. Both men have prison numbers, but are listed as in transit.

Garey Ballance was sentenced to six months for tax evasion.

He will be honored Wednesday at the Roanoke

That pretty much says it all. What's most pathetic about this is how stupid people are.

What?!? A DemonRAT committing a crime and going to prison? Has this been in the MSM coverage? I thought only the Bush Republican Administration was the party of corruption, and the DemonRATS were the "Truth Tellers"

Just another democRAT who said he did nothing wrong. oh yea, that couple of million that was misdirected was his all along. Naturally he had a right to share with his son.

Only being prosecuted because he is black.

On September 2, 2004, Frank Ballance and his son Judge Garey Ballance were indicted by a Federal Grand Jury. Frank Ballance was charged with diverting more than $100,000 in state funds meant for the John A. Hyman Memorial Foundation to his son, daughter, mother, church and law firm while he was a state senator. Judge Garey Balance was charged with willful failure to file a federal income tax return for 2000, a misdemeanor that has a maximum punishment of a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

I thought this was a joke from the headline...

I shouldn't be surprised, but I am...at how LOW a dem will sink to suck money from their constituents...

I wonder what kind of an UPROAR there would be if Duke Cunningham did the same thing???

HINT: Most of the uproar would be from Republicans!

Franks only regret is that someone else gets to take credit for creating Kwanza and Festivus.

Money isn't everything

Celebrating this thief is outrageous and shows just how out of the mainstream dems are. I can't imagine that any on our side will be having any tribute celebrations for Duke Cunningham. Alas I don't think crooks like those who make fortunes off of their positions are alone in Washington. They may not even be in the minority. I'd like to see dozens more in congress end up where they belong.

Well, this certainly explains how the 'rats define justice ... it means that they get our money in their pockets to use as they see fit.
