Conservatives Wary of Election 'McCainia'

Many Democrats and independents were among those supporters who turned up at a recent Kansas City signing of Sen. John McCain’s new book "Character Is Destiny.”

But the same political views that endear McCain to Democrats and independents arouse disdain among staunch conservatives – who could deny him the White House in 2008.

"Most conservatives struggle with him,” Lou Sheldon, founder of the Traditional Values Coalition, told the Kansas City Star.

Last month Rush Limbaugh castigated McCain as a "Republican in Name Only,” and earlier this year Pat Robertson told ABC News: "McCain I’d vote against under any circumstances.”

Among the issues that have landed McCain on the wrong side of conservatives are his support of campaign finance reform, his co-sponsoring of an immigration bill with Sen. Ted Kennedy, his membership in the "Gang of 14” legislators who compromised on judicial nominations, his challenge of the Bush administration’s policy on the treatment of POWs, and his attacks on the religious right.

He has called Robertson and Jerry Falwell "agents of intolerance” who exert an "evil influence” on the Republican Party.

"He always seems anxious to set himself apart and appeal to the Democrats,” Kevin Yowell, a Johnson County (Kan.) GOP political consultant told the Star.

McCain has said he hasn’t even "contemplated” whether he will run for president in 2008.

But a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll in mid-December showed McCain outpacing five other potential Republican candidates, including Virginia Sen. George Allen. McCain (22 percent) trailed only former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (30 percent).

We probably won't have to make that choice.

If McCain ever did get the Republican nomination (something that will never happen), he would be shocked at how quickly the MSM would turn on a dime and begin attacking him. The words "Keating 5" would be ringing 24/7. McCain is useful to the MsM to attack Bush. Nothing else.

Could deny him the White House in 2008????

I can honestly say, if it comes down to McCain vs. Hillary in 2008, I may just not vote. I have equal disdain for both of them. Short of Satan himself being the sole other candidate in the primaries, Hell will freeze over before I vote for John McCain for president of my local Spanish club, much less President of the United States.

I've said this before..leaving ALL politics out of it for the moment...McCain will never get the nomination for two reasons:

1. His health: He's had skin cancer...If Cheney is supposedly a health risk because of his heart..McCain is 10x more risky. The MSM would go nuts with all sort sof "careful" stories wondering about his cancer risk<{P. 2. Cindy: She's a compete whack job..She makes Tereza look normal. She's competely dropped out of the public eye, since she was hosptalized for pill abuse.., and she could NOT stand up to the campaign rigors and exposure..

McCain getting the nomination and squaring up against Hillary Clinton would pretty much be a guarenteed disaster for the nation. And, since someone's going to have to take the blame, who's it gonna be? Him (and his party) or her, (and hers).

It'd be REALLY hard to get myself out of bed to go vote for McCain, that's all I'm saying.

"...disdain among staunch conservatives."

The media sure does love that term "staunch conservative"; its another one of their infinite catchphrases/cliches. You could call us strong, faithful, ardent, steadfast, stalwart, zealous, etc, but, somehow, they love staunch. I'm not complaining about it--I have no problem with word "stauch"--I'm just pointing it out.

I will have to pull the lever for any of those before I ever vote for Hillary. It is sad that one of those may be the choice against Hillary.

I caught Thomas Sowell's interview on Fox News over the weekend and he said the only reason lately to vote Republican is because they are not Democrats!!! :) I must say, that at times, I agree with that statement.

It goes back a lot further than that. McCain's worst sin was to abandon the POW-MIAs from Vietnam.

And the worst problem is not that he's a RINO. The worst problem is that he's certifiable. He's a cross between Dr. Strangelove and the Manchurian Candidate.

Add to that that he spouts idealism but is thoroughly corrupt. He was one of the Keating Five. He did a deal with clinton and the DEA so they wouldn't prosecute his wife for stealing drugs. He dumped his loyal wife to marry a rich heiress to fund his political ambitions. And on and on.

The MSM chose Bob Dole for the GOP in 1996, which is exactly why Dubya had to be pre-ordained int 2000, otherwise the MSM would have nominated another RINO.

If a real conservative like Dubya is not pre-ordained at least a year ahead of time, McKeating could well get it.

It's always been a sad fact that for one to win the votes to become President as a Republican, one has to run to the right during the primary and then to the center for the general election. Just like Bush did. Either that, or be like Ronald Reagan and communicate your ideas to the general public and win votes from the Democrats.

McCain seems to think that joining the liberal media and the Democrats will get him elected as a Republican President. I don't see it happening under the present circumstances. Does anyone?

I look for him to "officially" switch to the RAT party and team up with her because he would have to be even stupider than I think he is to believe that the MSM would favor him over her in a presidential race.

Al Gore, Bill and Hillary died in a freak golf cart accident. Soon they were all facing God who started to grill them. God then asked Al Gore: What do you believe? Al had to think a long while on that, liberals mostly not knowing what they actually believe. Finally he said...I believe I won the 2000 election but I guess you had other plans and I will follow your will. God thought about that for a moment and then said "OK. Good answer. You can now sit on my left hand side today." God then asked Bill Clinton "What do you believe?". Bill thought a long, long while on what he could possibly believe about himself or believe in, and then he answered "I believe I was very naughty with women all my adult life and that maybe I should be ashamed of myself and have purer thoughts." God pondered on that and then said "OK. This once you can sit on my right hand side today." God then turned to Hillary and asked "What do you believe?"

Hillary didn't need to think about it. She quickly and LOUDLY said:

"I believe you're sitting in my chair!"

This is a classic Christmas week piece of page filler. There is absolutely no chance that: A mcpain will be the GOP nominee. B) Rudy Who? will be the nominee C) the beast will get elected.
I hate to make these lazy "experts" have to move on and develop another theme, but George Allen will be the GOP nominee and he will win. If he has the good sense to pick Ken Blackwell, by then the governor of Ohio, they will win big.
