'Meet the Press' summit reveals elite media's flaw
Townhall ^ | Dec. 28, 2005 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 12/28/2005 6:35:30 AM PST by conservativecorner

Watching Tom Brokaw, Ted Koppel and Tim Russert this past Sunday wasn't quite like seeing dinosaurs asking each other what's happened to all the tasty fronds, but the year-ending edition of NBC's "Meet the Press" offered an excellent glimpse at why the elite mainstream media as we know it is facing extinction.

No doubt intended as a grand treat for the viewing audience, "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert invited NBC's Tom Brokaw and ABC's Ted Koppel to ladle out some observations from their deep wells of wisdom for all of the world to imbibe.

These three giants of television journalism tut-tutted about one government failure after another, from the Katrina response to the government's inability to provide health care for everybody to our dismayingly low taxes. Brokaw agreed with Koppel, Koppel agreed with Brokaw. Russert nodded as one newsman repeated what the other one just said.

For example, regarding the Hurricane Katrina episode - in which the media collectively broke all chains of objectivity in order to preen with outrage over the plight of the downtrodden - Brokaw asserted "there were no gray areas in Katrina." By this he meant the media was 100 percent right for portraying the federal government as 100 percent wrong. This elicited nods all around. Brokaw even quoted Aaron Broussard, the Jefferson Parish president who openly wept on "Meet The Press" about the tardy federal response: "They didn't come. They promised they would come and they didn't come."

Too many Americans simply accept them as the last word, when it has become apparent that they are severely biased for the Left. They are like dinosaurs; and I hope their extinction comes soon. "Beat Your Chest" has always seemed to me to be Russert airing Democrats' dirty linen so they can "put it behind them" and move on to the next assault on America's independence.

Frankly, the pundits from both sides usually get the outcome wrong, it's just whether their predictions side with a conservative or liberal nature.

Now, it's fair to say that Brokaw, Koppel and Russert are three of the very best journalists the elite mainstream media have ever produced.

Says who?

To somebody 60 years old they're not.

I've noticed that "Katrina" is a major "talking point" since the rats have nothing else. They won't shut up about it, it's an ongoing litany into nothing, as far as I can tell. What in hell do the rats EXPECT Americans to DO about it? We have already donated, opened our shelters, hotels, homes etc. It's done, over with...the Katrina evacuees have moved on and are making their way into the future. The rats go on and on as if we are supposed to stop the entire country and feed NOLA for the rest of its life. Koppel and Brokejaw are just feeding the frenzy of the few rats who watch that show.

The American people will only tolerate so much of it but commie news covers it constantly as if it's the only story out there. There were TWO MAJOR HURRICANES after Katrina and not a shred of reporting done on them or the tens of thousands who were affected by their wrath.

Let's list what the rats have for 08 and 08:

1) They really REALLY hate George Bush
2) Karl Rove is STILL under investigation
3) Katrina Katrina Katrina yawning Katrina

I'm not buying that the rats have a chance in ANY election anytime soon. They are too disorganized and hate-filled.

I so agree with you. My dad and I used to watch Russert, thinking he was fairly balanced in his interviewing but you are right. He's gone completely over to the dark side and is nothing but a whining shill for the libnuts. I no longer can tolerate his show.

I loved the line about the dinosaurs. Also, the phrase "preen with outrage" which exactly captures the attitude of journalists covering Katrina.

That is so right.

For example, Bush's popularity has risen in the past 2 months because he has been fighting back. However, media will bemoan this and say the reason is because "Everyone has forgetten about Katrina". I actually heard this coming out of David Broder's mouth and a roomful of liberals shaking their head in approval.

The mainstream media serves its customers by providing confirmation and affirmation for a warped world-view. Libs not only crave what the MSM has to sell, it is a matter of survival, what with liberal tenets being refuted by events on a daily basis.

It should not surprise us then, that even the purveyors of these lies should require a little affirmation from time to time, from EACH OTHER, in order to sustain the lies they must believe.

Actually, Russert has become a caricature to the point of being downright laughable, especially when he does an appearence on The Today Show:

Katie: Tim Russert from Meet the Press has joined us. Tim, the economy is up, inflation is down, there's a housing boom, jobs are up, and unemployment is at an all-time low. What does this mean for the president?

Russert: Well Katie, this is bad news for George W. Bush...

You'll begin hearing from the Democrat party talking points that the election in Iraq was not successful, it had numerous cases of fraud, and it will result in a fundamentalist government.

Big-name, important conservatives will jump ship in droves, because they think the president botched the opportunity there, and now we've spent blood and treasure to install a Taliban-style government in Iraq.

That's their next big talking point.

Classic conservative prose. Bookmarked. :) You got to love how Goldberg weaves in the word Oldsmobile. An Xmas treat for guys like me who like to label Brokaw, Russert, Koppel, et al as Olds Media in honor of George Will's analysis that uses the Oldsmobile's slide into oblivion as a metaphor for Old Media.

Goldberg goes on to write:
Such nostalgia is understandable given the culture these men grew up in. In the post-World War II era, television journalism was almost a quasi-governmental institution. There were only three networks, and their news broadcasts set the national debate and drew the nation together in a way that had never happened before. Eventually, the establishment felt entitled to this arrangement. They forgot that this system was the unintended offspring of WWII and the Cold War and the advent of television. Before TV, American journalism was more boisterous and less revered.

Today's technological glitz notwithstanding, we are returning to the norm, and the guild-mentality consensus we've "enjoyed" this last half-century is evaporating and will likely never return.
In a droll moment Rather uses a chivalrous metaphor that agrees with Goldberg's analysis.
"CBS News has a culture, has a history that for those of us who work here, is very real — that we see it as a sort of magical mystical kingdom of journalistic knights — and I know I can mentally hear people rolling their eyes, that’s the way we feel." Dan Rather

These MSM clowns used to give me a real bad headache. The pain has now moved further South, and is more appropriately called a "pain in the a**!" Listening to them has the same effect as taking an overdose of ExLax, and it makes one sick to one's stomach. They are has-beens, never-were's, and never-will-be's as far as I'm concerned, and the MSM is starting to realize that we in the pubic are a hell of a lot smarter than they give us credit for. Long live the honesty of the internet!! Long live the truth of FR!!

A good read is Bernie Goldberg's first book 'Bias' (I haven't read his second). It explains just how out of touch these people are; they truly believe they're mainstream. The evening news is targeted at urban liberals and the media has decided that either no on else counts or there is no one else.

Listening to the MSM is what dinosaurs sounded like when faced with extinction.

I'll never forget the 1964 Republican Convention when some speaker made a comment about the Networks and most of the delegates turned around, looked up at the deities in the glass enclosed booths and booed. It was electrifying!

Yet ANOTHER way to mess with a Liberal. Get them into a Katrina discussion (not hard, just say "Katrina"). Then ask them what the traditional role of the Federal Government has been when Hurricanes (or any Natural Disaster) strike. Oh and do they know what the "Posse Comitatus" Act is?

As usual, they just sputter off, since they don't know the answers.

"there were no gray areas in Katrina"

"for portraying the federal government as 100 percent wrong"

I'm so sick of hearing this. We have tornadoes in our area not hurricanes. We don't get a three day notice that we are about to be hit, we might get ten minutes to an hour to GET OUT, not three days. NO ONE has to tell us to seek shelter especially not the President of the United States, the governor or the mayor. We actually have sense enough to do it ourselves.

We have had people's families completely wiped out. NO ONE held concerts, no one but the local community (which was expected) helped them. We don't expect the Federal government to be our nanny. We learned to take care of ourselves and to know what to do in case of a tornado. I don't understand why people who live in a hurricane area don't do the same.

If I (in Arkansas) knew there was a chance of a category four hurricane about to hit New Orleans by listening to the news then anyone living in New Orleans should have known too. They were told to take, at least, a three day supply of water, food, clothes, medicine, etc. and to GET OUT, find shelter. Instead, they were roaming the streets like nothing was about to happen. Now, someone else is suppose to take the blame?!!!

No one in their right mind would expect it. But, we are talking about the MSM who blew this into another "scandal" by the Bush Administration. It's getting old, fast. Most people can see straight through them by now. They just haven't figured it out yet as they lose more and more readers/viewers (which can't happen fast enough for me). We have finally figured out they are a bunch of lying creeps who couldn't care less about this country (especially people in flyover country). They are more interested in their beltway cocktails parties where everyone agrees with them.

Right! The libnuts are nutso because Bush didn't personally fly a million-plus helicopters into 186 SQUARE MILES of NOLA to rescue those who ignored the warnings to flee. They are enraged that Bush dared to flood all but one road into the city.

Of course..it's all Bush's fault, him and Rove blew up the levees, specifically in and around the 9th ward.
