Philadelphia School District Lawyer Calls Jurors 'Crackers' Attorney Removed As Lead Councel After Racist Comments

POSTED: 10:17 am EST December 28, 2005 UPDATED: 10:25 am EST December 28, 2005

PHILADELPHIA -- Attorney Carl Singley has lost his role as lead counsel in a school district discrimination case after allegations that he called several white jurors "crackers" after their verdict.

The jury had awarded about $3 million in damages to four white plaintiffs who contended that their boss in the Philadelphia School District's purchasing department had fired them in 2003 for racial reasons.

Singley, who is black, was accused of making the comment to jurors in a courthouse elevator after last week's verdict. He soon found himself back in the courtroom before U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle III.

"John Kerry was in Philly during the campaign last year. At the end of his speech, he gave the audience (mostly black) the "black power" sign - raisning his fist in the air."

That is truly, truly, one of the faggiest things I've ever heard of. What a fake phoney white boy he is. LOL! If I was black that would have lost him my vote right on the spot.

The guy is obviously an idiot, but why was he in front of a judge after the comment? He has the right to say whatever he wants.

He's an officer of the court and he does not get to say "whatever he wants" to a jury. If the judge does not slap this clown hard, the judge needs slapped around too.

How did the word "cracker" as a derogatory word towards whites come out? Anyone know?

Cracker used to be the term of choice in Georgia for rural whites. The more generic 'redneck' has now largely displaced the term. Before the Braves moved from Milwaukee to play in the recently constructed (at that time) Atlanta Stadium, the facility was the home to the Atlanta Crackers of the AAA Southern League.

The joke is that you can call a native Georgian a 'Cracker' and he won't be insulted - just like a real redneck will laugh at a Jeff Foxworthy 'You may be a redneck...' joke.

Me too. I would not even think it was racist to call me cracker...I would just look at the person like they were from another planet. What does that mean anyway Cracker. The guy should still be part of the case. Why can't we all be adults.

There is a new derogatory term for clueless white Georgians -- a "Rocker".

Reading 'Dark Skies' well researched post reminds me that the proper insult for a Cracker is 'Peckerwood', an obvious derivitive of 'woodpecker' and a more specific insulting term for the lowland or midland poor whites who live in the piney woods.

And does anyone think we could be having this discussion about any group other than southern white males?

It's not actually derogatory towards all whites, when I was growing up, that's what we called poor whites as a slur, it's usage is virtually identical the other word which I will not say, in that, by most people, if it is used, it is only used to describe a certain lower/lowest class of the group in question.

Could it be that for so long racists could only be white and then, here in a court of law, not only does the trial show that a non-white boss can be a racist, it is reinforced by the defendants lawyer? Also this lawyer will be the scapegoat for all reverse discrimination verdicts in the future? IMO

...the facility was the home to the Atlanta Crackers of the AAA Southern League.

And a farm team of, of all things, the Boston Red Sox. I remember being a kid in Atlanta in the Spring of, I think, 1950, and having the Red Sox stop in for an afternoon on their way north from Florida. They were given a parade up Peachtree St., the players riding in the backs of stakebody trucks. They then played an exhibition game with the Crackers. Our neighbor at the Piedmont Hotel was a Crackers outfielder who would eventually wind up in Cooperstown -- Eddie Matthews.

Well, nowadays most Crackers (and I am one) have a pretty good sense of self-deprecating humor. That makes them a hard group to insult.

I recommend that same tactic to all ethnic groups if they want to enjoy life and keep the knots out of the knickers.

There's no "official" designation as such. I'm licensed in Texas and admitted to practice in several federal jurisdictions, including the USSC, and I've never been charged with being an "officer of the court." While it may be a way to think about it, in terms of ethical behavior, its mostly a TV phrase.

Further, the incident was in an elevator and not in the court room. While a judge MAY have some inherent powers in his own court, he doesn't get to control speech outside the court. I think the judge might be on solid ground exercising HIS first amendment rights about what the lawyer said, and he can make it sound intimidating. If that's what happened, then fine. But for a judge to assume he has the power to control the speech of a lawyer in an elevator, he is abusing his power.

Actually, he DOES get to say whatever he wants. He was not in court, but in an elevator. Your first amendment rights don't end just because you are an attorney in a courthouse elevator talking bad about jurors when you lost a case.

He should be spending more time wondering why he didn't win, but absent that, he can say whatever he wants. I guess the judge can chastize him or say whatever he wants to him, but if he was fined, that's wrong. Judges don't get to sanction speech they don't like.

Since there were multiple jurors as well as the lawyer involved, I take it that it was in the court building. Is it your position that when I was a juror and the judge charged us to have no communication with the lawyers in the case outside the courtroom, that he exceeded his authority? Is it your contention that you could harrangue black jurors and use a racial ephethet in the elevator on the way from the courtroom without legal consequence?
