LOS ANGELES - Who's afraid of a couple of gay cowboys? Not moviegoers, who helped "Brokeback Mountain" post the highest per-screen average over the film-flush holiday weekend.
The Ang Lee film, which follows the 20-year forbidden romance between two roughneck ranch hands, earned $13,599 per theater, compared with $9,305 for weekend winner "King Kong" and $8,225 for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."
The big question is whether "Brokeback" can maintain its momentum as it moves from selected cities, where audiences are receptive to the subject matter, to suburbs far and wide, where that might not be the case.
Early numbers — and early awards buzz — establish the picture's staying power, industry insiders say. "Brokeback" earned a leading seven Golden Globe nominations.
"It delivered very strong growth in what is truly a highly unforgiving, competitive, cruel market at this Christmas period," said Jack Foley, president of theatrical distribution for Focus Features. "It showed it has breadth beyond the gay community."
Distributors planned to roll out the film slowly. It opened in just six theaters, where it earned an "unprecedented" $109,000 per venue, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.

I guess when the total box office take is crummy, you talk about sales per screen. There is a reason the movie is on so few screens...a very limited audience. Who really wants to see two gay sheepherders. If there is a sequel, I suggest the sheep go into hiding.

Hollyweirds contribution to society= normalizing homosexuality, promiscuity and a general lowering of morals.
The hack flacking for this film is unreal! Every other box office tally lists the amount of million$ the film grossed over the period. In order to inflate this one, they have to use the "per-screen average." Pure propaganda.
I guess we all need to keep our fingers crossed for this movie's success, right? Isn't it great that all of those Golden Globe nominations for this movie were announced just in time to help make it successful? barf
All this means is that most of the gays are seeing it. I think everybody knew they would go flock to see the movie, it has a built-in niche audience.
Hmm...because of it's relatively limited release, wouldn't it be more accurate to compare the "per theater" earnings of Kong and Narnia in the same cities where Brokeback was showing? Just a thought.

hmmm... I have NEVER (NEVER NEVER NEVER) heard of this 'per screen' average being used to rate a movie success.

Mel Gibson made a half billion for 'The Passion of the Christ'- what is the total take for this piece of excrement ?
They are trying to compare apples to oranges.
Their marketing strategy is to roll it out to the top homo markets across the U.S. They're almost out of markets. The producers spent $14 million to the movie and the box office take has been $8 million, which means the producers have made approximately $4 million of that. They're still $10 million in the hole (pun not intended!) This movie is a flop, regardless of what the gay media cheerleaders try to say.
I suspect they are going to see it multiple times as winter weather makes picking up one night stands in parks a bit uncomfortable.
This is the homosexual "Titanic," a movie that will be seen 10-20 times by males homos as a date movie and by f*g hags. Since there are far less homos than teen girls, the take at the box office will be miniscule for the pudding eating movie in comparison to ship-sinking special effects.
I wouldn't say it's a flop. It was relatively cheap to make, and there are enough gays who do want to see the movie for it to recover it's costs and make a profit. But it will never play in fly-over country, but it still won't prevent the movie from being profitable.
Once they are gone...It's crickets chirping...
Next they will be toting up the amount of popcorn sold to try and convince the public that this farce is making any money. But, in the end it doesn't matter if this movie totally flops. Hollyweird will hail it as a cinematic "masterpiece" and it will sweep the oscars.
