BEIJING (AP) - China accused Japan on Thursday of "vile behavior" for blaming the suicide of a Japanese diplomat on Chinese agents, setting off a new round of tensions between the Asian rivals.

China's Foreign Ministry criticized a statement by a Japanese government official Wednesday that the Japanese consulate official in Shanghai killed himself in May 2004 as a result of "an impermissible act by the Chinese security authorities."

The diplomat's identity has not been released by authorities because of privacy concerns, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said.

TOPICS: News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: 2008; china; elections; japan; tensions; war
The well-ignored story in the U.S. for all of 2005 has been the increasingly brazen activity of Chinese military intelligence operatives all around Asia and in the US and China's increasing willingness to "flex its muscle". The day when tensions spill over into actions and reactions is not far off.

An understatement if I've ever seen one!

It is time for Japan to become a nuclear weapons power.

Give the Chinese some food for thought...

The US will be beside Japan if war ever breaks out between the two. Democracy > communist authoritarian

And my God help us if it does. It may not be avoidable, but that would probably be a bloodbath if we ever had an all-out war with China. Not in an Iraq sense where we're talking a couple thousand...in a WWII sense. I've never talked to ANYONE who was completely confident we could win. At best it would take everything we have in us and we're screwed if we get a Dem in there. They'll wait till China's nuked half the country to do anything.

On a political note (which may not matter if we have that war) it may affect the election alright since Hillary's hubbie basically sold the Chinese the weapons they'll attack us with so he could build his monument to himself.

Speaking of '08 elections... I saw my first Hillary bumper sticker! Yes - and the car had two no less (two different ones). Unreal. My mom was in the car with me and when we saw it was a couple of young boys (i.e. kids), my mom said "what do those kids know?"

We wouldnt fight any type of land war with china unless they invaded the Japanese homeland. We would annihilate their navy and launch stand off weapons at their mainland facilities. Then china would probably launch their limited amount of nukes at the US because they lost face(you know the lame custom in china that looks ignorant to the west). We would have to respond in kind with an overwhelming destruction of ever city, military asset, and population centers in their country. Yes we would lose a few cities but they would be utterly destroyed. A very scary scenerio that I hope never happens.

You've seriously got to wonder if Hillary is why we're not hearing more about China's threatening behavior. No Dem has a chance if people are reminded that the whole world doesn't want sit around a campfire and sing Kumbaya with us and no amount of diplomatic butt-kissing can fix that if you're not willing to back it up (which modern Dems are not....Bill failed on this front as did Jimmy Carter).

Maybe if we send them a copy of "War Games"....it explains why it would be stupid for them to launch nukes.

What's scary is that China has limit nukes, but Russia has a buttload and I'm not sure Putin wouldn't jump in on that action. Gorbechev was less creepy than Putin. I think Putin has every intention of trying to turn them back into the USSR if he can.

Yeah russia would launch at us if we had a nuclear exchange with china. They both are on the target list if nukes ever start flying. If we are going to be destroyed then china and russia will be as well and I think they know this.

I can't believe the loss of even one US city, would be acceptable...especially to those living there.

That's what I'm saying. I don't think it would be one city. I think once nukes launch, it's a WWIII nightmare situation.

Think about it, the Chinese having war games with Russia. Russia, Germany, and France selling their souls to Saddam Hussein. Korea making threats.

I think it would be opening Pandora's box if the Chinese dropped a nuke because once we nuke back, I think a bunch of other countries would jump into the fray.

If they do it, these people clearly didn't watch "War Games". They don't understand that they can't win....nobody can win. That's whole point. We would wipe each other off the map if Russia joins in, so what's the point? China and Korea don't seem to get that.

It would indeed be horrible, and I cannot name one US city, that I would sacrifice for Taiwan, or Japan.

I never understood what W thought he saw in those eyes. They look dead to me.

I think W was saying nice things to try and get along. Kinda like the fact that he never called Russia, Germany, or France on the carpet for helping Saddam and it took a very long time for him to remotely point out that Clinton was an idiot when it came to foreign affairs.

He can't come out and said "I think Putin's a heartless commie prick who wants to take over the world" when Putin hasn't been aggressive and is still pretending to try and get along with us. BUT, I think it's just a matter of time (if Putin gets his way) that all that will stop if the Russians choose to not get him out of there.

You're assuming (ass-u-mption), that China has the "20 ICBM's" and that's all they got. I heard that figure in the 1980's, I think that number is SIGNIFICANTLY higher now. I wouldn't be surprised if they have 100-200 ICBM's that can hit anywhere in the continental US.

What's for sure is that they have enough SRBM's to hit and destroy Japan. Besides, once a nuke exchange starts, it own't just be localized between two countries. The whole region will go unstable, and then you have the INdian/Pakistan situation, the fall out from China may go to Russia (but eventually the fallouts will reach the US west coast, because that's where the wind goes, eastward).
