People Dumpster Diving For Wendy's Promotion

Dumpster diving has become popular among some fast-food consumers, thanks to a Wendy’s Restaurant promotion for free airfare. Wendy’s has partnered with Coca-Cola and AirTran Airlines in a promotional deal in which consumers who collect 32 soft-drink cups with a yellow ticket on the side can redeem the tickets for a free one-way ticket on an AirTran flight. Sixty-four tickets earn a consumer a roundtrip ticket.

Those trying to earn the free airfare can go about it the old fashioned way by purchasing 32 soft drinks, sizes 20 or 32 ounces, from a Wendy’s restaurant. Other collectors have learned that they don’t have to buy the drink; they’ve chosen to Dumpster dive.

The Dumpster divers wait for others to throw their cups away and then head for the trash. Some even spend hours going through trash bags behind Wendy’s restaurants.

There is also a growing cup business on eBay.

“It’s just captured people’s imaginations in a way we couldn’t have imagined,” said Wendy’s spokesman Bob Bertini.

Jamie Alpert has spent about sixty hours collecting more than 500 cups in New York City. She's already earned a round trip for herself and three more for her family.

Marketing Consultant Joel Warody does not think the promotion is worth such efforts as Dumpster diving for the average person.

“One of the questions that Wendy’s has to ask itself (is) are the people who are actually picking up these cups the people they want frequenting their stores,” said Warody.

Wendy’s thinks so, said Bertini.

“We’ve heard about people repeatedly going through the pickup window,” said Bertini. “It’s all good.”

Wendy’s stops selling the cups with the airfare promotions on them Dec. 31.

Everytime there's an anti-war protest in DC, it's dumpster diving time. It's like it's part of the event.

I heard about this two weeks ago. The following day I went to Wendy's after a job interview because it was the closest place. After reading the cup, I remembered the promotion and took the cup home. I didn't ask anyone "You gonna drink that?" or anything.

Frankly, I don't know if people were watching me or not, but I wound up emptying the cup, sticking a napkin in it and stuffing it in my bag and I took it home.

Geez, it may still be in that bag!

Don't confuse this with the protestors simply coming and going from their homes.

I hope they know (or care) that AirTran used to be ValueJet.

Yeah, you got that right. And somehow I imagine that 32 cups doesn't get you a trip from DC to San Diego. Gotta read those restrictions.

If those people would just work the few hours that it takes to collect all those damn cups they could salvage their dignity and have the airfare as well.

OY!

Or if they would take the money they would have spent on Wendy's meals trying to "earn" the "free" airfare, they could do the same. I learned a long time ago, that it's not free if you have to spend money to get it and I guess some people just don't.... (get it, that is).

Dumpsters--one-way ticket on an AirTran flight.

Time for racial profiling at the dumpsters?
