WASHINGTON - Federal prosecutors and lawyers for Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff consulted briefly Friday with a federal judge in Miami as they put the finishing touches on a plea deal that could be announced as early as Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
The plea agreement would secure the lobbyist's testimony against several members of Congress who received favors from him or his clients.
Abramoff and a former partner were indicted in Miami in August on charges of conspiracy and fraud for allegedly lying about their assets to help secure financing to purchase a fleet of gambling boats.
For the past two weeks, pressure has been intensifying on Abramoff to strike a deal with prosecutors since his former business partner, Adam Kidan, pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy in connection with the 2000 SunCruz deal.
Abramoff's cooperation would be a boon to an ongoing Justice Department investigation of congressional corruption, possibly helping prosecutors build criminal cases against up to 20 lawmakers and their staff members.
The sources, who requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks, said the lawyers spoke by phone with U.S. District Judge Paul C. Huck, giving him an update on the plea negotiations. Huck scheduled another status conference for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The deal could be completed before then, the sources said. Abramoff could sign the plea agreement and exchange it with prosecutors via fax over the weekend, they said.
Details of where Abramoff will enter his plea are still being worked out. Abramoff's lawyers have indicated that they want the plea to be made in U.S. District Court in Washington, one of the sources said.
If that happens, Abramoff would plead guilty to charges contained in what is known as a criminal information a filing made by a federal prosecutor with a defendant's permission that bypasses action by a grand jury.
The lawyers could then apprise Huck about the plea and its effect on the case in Miami.
Abramoff and Kidan were indicted for allegedly concocting a fake $23 million wire transfer to make it appear they were putting their own money into the SunCruz deal. Two lenders agreed to provide $60 million in financing for the SunCruz purchase based on that false wire transfer, according to prosecutors.
For months, prosecutors in Washington have focused on whether Abramoff defrauded his Indian tribe clients of millions of dollars and used improper influence on members of Congress.
In a five-year span ending in early 2004, Indian tribes represented by the lobbyist contributed millions of dollars in casino income to congressional campaigns, often routing the money through political action committees for conservative members of Congress who opposed gambling.
Abramoff also provided trips, skybox fundraisers, golf fees, frequent meals, entertainment and jobs for lawmakers' relatives and aides.
Kidan and Abramoff bought SunCruz from Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis, who was slain in 2001 in a gangland-style hit in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Investigators say Boulis and Kidan were fighting for control of SunCruz; Kidan has denied any involvement in Boulis' death.
Three men were arrested in September on murder charges in Boulis' killing and are awaiting trial.
Michael Scanlon, another former Abramoff associate, pleaded guilty in November in a separate case in Washington.
Scanlon said he helped Abramoff and Kidan buy SunCruz by persuading Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, to insert comments into the Congressional Record that were "calculated to pressure the then-owner to sell on terms favorable" to Abramoff and Kidan.
I'm sure all the Democrats that took money from Abramoff or his cohorts are relieved to see him described as a Republican lobbyist by AP.
Let the chips fall where they may.
'Culture of Corruption' :-D

He's been in business for a long time, hasn't he? He must know where a lot of bodies are buried. I wonder if they will go back as far as the statutes of limitations allow?
Democrats Don't Know Jack??? (Abramoff, but got $Millions) ^

Plea Deal. Imagine if he gave up all the names for a deal. I see 20 congressmen facing charges, a massive wave of resignations.
I hope this takes out the old bulls. Maybe we can elect fresh young faces that has some honesty in their soul.
That only applies to republicans.
Harry Reid and Charles Rangle both got money because of him, and they both know it, but since it wasn't his name on the checks, but his clients (whose money he directed towards them), they aren't budging, in fact, Rangel won't even give back the money and Reid is refusing to also.
Be a real shame if the cover-up deal falls apart. I would gladly trade a half dozen RINO's for a dozen Dimo's.
ONE WORD - FAIRTAX -
Hang the corrupt bastards - hang them all and burn down their houses - I will stop short of selling their children - but we should for sure hang Washington whores.
bttt
Oh.. that's right. Talk show hosts are on a well-deserved break. Seriously they deserve and need the time off.
But why "best of?" They're good but they ain't that good! Why not fill-in hosts?
One syndicated host pointed out last week events keep on happening like Abramoff, he said -- and we need live and current discussion before Alito and abortion are 24/7 topics. He then promptly left for the Christmas holidays and has "best of" running all this week.
Lot's of good music 24/7 on the local FM classical station.
Thats the difference between us and the DUmmies. We know all politicians are scum, while they think theirs are all saints.
Norah O'Donnell on MSNBC...just told of this news..and asked her guests if this means "that the Republicans will lose the majority in the House?"
LOL...I know there as prolly just as many dems that Abramhoff could turn on, as Republicans...
Harry Reid - 1) call your office and 2) put on clean underwear!
I second your emotions...
I am shocked that the stations that have these talk show hosts, don't require them to have subs...
I don't begrudge any of them time off....they do work hard...but, the NEWS is a 24/7 entity...and that NEWS needs to be dissected and in this case, for sure..
EXPOSED...
I cannot believe there are only about 20 something posts on this thread...I thought this one would be a long thread..
I think we are gonna find out just how the "ethics" are spread around in Washington, when we see who gets dragged down by Jack..and who doesn't.
He darn sure better be on ole Jack's HIT list....
If he isn't...the freepers will make sure that there will be heck to pay.
See...unlike the DUmmies...IF one of our own is truly "dirty" we want to know...ala Rep. Cunningham...but, if they are being set-up, like Delay "might" be...then we want that to be known also.
Abramoff WAS a Republican lobbyist. He was the former head of the national College Republicans. He met his wife at a party at the Reagan White House.
The MSM is up to it's old tricks again, claiming Abramoff is a GOP lobbyist.
FYI:
Nearly three dozen members of Congress, including leaders from both parties, pressed the government to block a Louisiana Indian tribe from opening a casino while the lawmakers collected large donations from rival tribes and their lobbyist, Jack Abramoff.
Many intervened with letters to Interior Secretary Gale Norton within days of receiving money from tribes represented by Abramoff or using the lobbyist's restaurant for fundraising, an Associated Press review of campaign records, IRS records and congressional correspondence found.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican, held a fundraiser at Abramoff's Signatures restaurant in Washington on June 3, 2003, that collected at least $21,500 for his Keep Our Majority political action committee from the lobbyist's firm and tribal clients.
Seven days later, Hastert wrote Norton urging her to reject the Jena tribe of Choctaw Indians' request for a new casino. ...
Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid sent a letter to Norton on March 5, 2002 ... The next day, the Coushattas issued a $5,000 check to Reid's tax-exempt political group, the Searchlight Leadership Fund. A second Abramoff tribe sent another $5,000 to Reid's group. Reid ultimately received more than $66,000 in Abramoff-related donations between 2001 and 2004. ...
Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., the former Senate GOP leader, wrote Norton on March 1, 2002, to "seriously urge" she reject the Jena casino. Lott received $10,000 in donations from Abramoff tribes just before the letter and $55,000 soon after. Lott's office said he sent the letter because his state's Choctaw tribe and a casino company were concerned about losing business.
Then-Sen. John Breaux (news, bio, voting record), D-La., wrote Norton on March 1, 2002. Five days later the Coushattas sent $1,000 to his campaign and $10,000 to his library fund, tribal records show.
Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., wrote Norton on June 14, 2001, one of the first such letters. Cochran's political committee got $6,000 from Abramoff tribes in the weeks before the letter, and another $71,000 in the three years after.
Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., who was engaged in a tight re-election race in 2002, sent her letter March 6, 2002. That same day, the Coushattas sent $2,000 to her campaign and she received $5,000 more by the end of that month. By year's end, the total had grown to at least $24,000.
The money involved totals to over $800,000, far more than the cash output involved in the Keating 5 savings-and-loan scandal in the 80s. Unlike the Keating scandal, where John McCain was the only Republican involved in the cash-for-influence scandal, Abramoff made sure that he worked both parties in depth to maximize his ability to influence the bureaucracy at Interior.
There's more:
Senator Dorgan (Dem-ND) held a fundraiser in Abramoff's skybox. One of the ND tribes paid for the use of the box for Dorgan's fundraiser. (AP)
Dorgan collected $11,500 plus in political donations from the Abramoff's partner who was representing the Mass. Mashpee tribe after he pushed for federal recognition of them .(AP)
Rangel has taken $27,000 from the Mississippi Choctaws and another $9,000 from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in California since 1999. Both tribes are eager to cash in on casino gambling and are clients of the indicted Abramoff. The tribes funneled $27,000 to Rangel's leadership PAC - used to help elect other Democrats - and routed another $9,000 directly to the Harlem Democrat's re-election campaign. A study by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics found that 210 members of Congress have received campaign cash from Abramoff, his associates or his Indian-tribe clients. (NY Post)
