The way I understand the National Secrets Act in the UK, if this happened there we wouldn't even be having this conversation as the reporters would already be in jail for a long time, with or without revealing their sources.

Quite true, and even IF it was a crime, because the information was classified, it cannot legally be released to the media.

Yeah, informing the media instead of the proper authorities (who can actually do something about wrongdoing) makes a poor case for whistleblower protection.

This would have all been doing according to procedure, and the whistleblower would have been safe from any repercussion. As is stands now, he or she broke the law, and broke it good and hard. Either we really drop the hammer on the violator, or we may as well save ourselves some money and just stop classifying things.
